Veremos agora alguns acontecimentos que pode Evid^encia alguma ocorr^encia com o Sol num futuro seja ele pr'oximo ou distante:

1: BURACO CORONAL.Buraco coronais s~ao 'areas onde a coroa solar 'e mais escura, fria, e possui uma densidade de plasma mais baixa do que a m'edia da coroa (cerca de 100 vezes menos do que a m'edia). Foram encontrados quando telesc'opios de raios X da Skylab revelaram a estrutura da coroa solar. Buracos coronais est~ao relacionados com concentrac~oes unipolares de linhas de campo magn'etico abertas, sendo a regi~ao onde tais linhas estendem-se indefinitivamente no espaco, ao inv'es de retornarem para o Sol. Assim sendo, estas regi~oes permitem a sa'ida de material da coroa solar para o espaco, raz~ao pelo qual tais regi~oes s~ao mais frias, escuras e menos densas que outras partes da coroa solar.

Talvez esses buracos de cor preta imensos podem evid^encia alguma alterac~ao no Sol, seja na sua formula qu'imica que faz ele viver ou at'e alguma poss'ivel doenca que o Sol esteja enfrentando, mas como a ci^encia diz 'e algo comum no Sol.

Hi all,

Back to mining the newspaper clipping collection on the UFO Research (New South Wales) website. This time to look behind a clipping dated Friday 13 Nov 1970, titled "Navy looks into UFO story." The text reads:

"LAUNCESTON, THURS

The Navy has asked for a report on the sighting of an unidentified flying object near Binolong Bay in Northern Tasmania.

Mr H C Glatty saw the object from his home in Binolong Bay about a fortnight ago. He said it seemed to rise out of the sea north of Binolong Bay near Eddystone Point.

The Navy Department heard about the object after Mr Glatty reported it to the nearby St Helens police.

Mr M G Bevan and Mr D L Riley of St Helens spotted it from their backyards as it flew over St Helens about 6.30pm.

Mr Riley said the UFO looked to be about 'the same size as a porpoise and was painted red, white and blue.'

The object seemed to move very slowly - much slower than a jet aircraft. It took a long while before it disappeared he said.

"The strange part about it was it made absolutely no noise.: "It was a bit eerie" agreed Mr Bevan. He said he saw the object first and called his wife and later Mr Riley and his family to look at it. "It went straight up north-east of here, around Eddystone Point, I think," he said.

"It then turned around and headed directly south. I had my field glasses on it and watched it closely for about eight to ten minutes. It was at a terrific height" said Mr Bevan.

"Judging from jets I have seen it would be at least 60,000ft. It happened at six minutes past six on our kitchen clock. The thing is cigar shaped, no wings, just that vapour trail it left behind."

Mr Bevan has seen a similar object before but he said it was going in the opposite direction. It was coming from St Marys and heading towards Eddystone Point."

AUSTRALIAN NAVY UAP FILES:

There are very few instances where the Australian Navy has shown an interest in reports of UAP. I can think of the following times that the Australian Navy is mentioned in UAP files:

1. The 1954 Naval aircraft encounter near Goulburn in 1954 Click here and here for my posts on this case.

2. The HMAS Adroit 1978 report (click here.)

3. A Navy file, NAA file series A6826 control symbol 1361/1/1-3 titled "Earth satellites, space vehicles and Unidentified Flying Objects - general."

4. Some documents on various RAAF UAP file series A703 control symbol 580/1/1 parts 1-35.

5. A Navy file, NAA file series E499/18 control symbol C 21/4/41 titled "Unidentified flying object sightings."

RAAF FILES:

Interestingly, there are records of these 1970 Tasmanian sightings on the RAAF's UAP files, namely NAA file series A703 control symbol 580/1/1 Part 14.

Pages 153-158 of the digitised version are a report by Mr Glatte. Mr Glatte, age 55, was a book keeper/cashier living at Binalong Bay, Tasmania. At about 1800hrs (TST) for about ten minutes, in his own home, he saw an unusual object. The sky had some cloud but was otherwise clear. The object was first observed 10 degrees to the right of the Eddystone light, and at an angular elevation of 5 degrees. Compass bearing was 010 degrees true (plus or minus 5 degrees.)

His attention was drawn to "What appeared to be an unusual shaped cloud-vapour trail." In colour the object was "White or grey with red tail."

At its nearest approach it reached an elevation of 80 degrees and a bearing of 090 degrees true. No obvious method of propulsion was visible and there was no sound noted.

The object was lost to sight in the south at an angle of 30 degrees, then obscured by trees, bearing 180 degrees true. There was a 'residual vapour trail long after disappearance.'

There is a note to question 26, which says "Observer pointed out path of object to Flt Lt A E Bentley, navigator at interview.

Question 27 is "How many witnesses to the sighting?" The answer was "I know of six, but they would not be able to make a sighting as early as I did." The names shown were, Mr M Bevan of St Helens and Mr D L Riley plus wives, and Mr and Mrs H C Ponting c/- St Helens.

Question 28 is "Any other sightings?" The response was "Approx 16 mths previous travelling in opposite direction."

A sketch is provided which shows a cigar shaped object with wings and two tail features. There are notes which read "Underside view" and "painted red (refers to red tail features), remainder white or gray."

COMMENT:

To me, the sketch shows the object was not a cloud but had an aircraft-like shape.

Mr Glatte dated his report 30 Nov 1970.

Page 177 is a typed statement by Mr H C Glatte dated 29 Oct 1970. in the statement he says in part, "...which makes it obvious it was launched from a sea-going vessel." This statement leads me to think that this is why the Department of Navy took an interest in this report.

Pages 174-176 are a handwritten statement from Mr Glatte which matches the typed statement above.

Page 173 is a memo dated 6 Nov 1970 from the Naval Intelligence Division of the Department of the Navy (file reference 31/16/4) to DAFI. "Following the recent telephone conversation between Lieutenant Commander Oaxley and Squadron Leader Hickey the enclosed report from Mr Glatte concerns an unidentified flying object is forwarded for your retention."

Page 172 is a handwritten note dated 10 Nov 1970. It is addressed to HQSC Department of Air.

"Enclosed is a copy of a report by Mr H C Glatte, Binalong Bay, Tasmania, of the sighting of an unidentified flying object.

2. Will you please arrange to have Mr Glatte interviewed by a responsible person. Mr Glatte also says he made a verbal report to the local police station at St Helens. You may wish to send a proforma to the officer and have him conduct the interview, if no RAAF officer in Tasmania is available."

Page 171, dated 11 Nov 12970 and is a hand written note:

"1. Re folios 3 and 4.

2. DNI telephoned and asked me to let you know that they have received a press query on this matter and had informed the press that they had referred it to us.

3. I told DNI of the action I had taken."

The memo was signed "Flt Lt Ufologist."

Page 152 is a memo dated 8 Dec 1970 from Wing Commander T S Fairbairn, HQSC to DAFI.

"1. The investigation of a report in connexion with the sighting of an unidentified flying object at St Helens, Tasmania on 28th October was carried out by Flt Lt A E Bentley (GD Nav) of Tasmanian Squadron ATC on 30th November, 1970.

2. The report of the Investigating Officer together with a copy of an enquiry from S Kaufman of Belmont. NSW is enclosed. The original letter has been returned to Mr Glatte for his retention and reply."

WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE SIGHTING?

Pages 156-157 are the RAAF's "Unit evaluation" of what they thought was the cause of the sighting.

There was a civilian aircraft in the area at the time, namely a Qantas HS125 heading 190 degrees true at 35,000 feet. ATA over St Helens at 0709Z (1809 Tasmanian Summer Time.)

The observer was at 4114S and 14817 East.

No balloons or temperature inversions in the area.

The RAAF concluded that the object was probably the Qantas trainer HS125, call sign VH-ECF. A hand written note says:

"1. There is no doubt in my mind that what Mr Glatte saw was the Qantas HS125 which was overflying Flinders Island/St Helens hence Hobart at 35,000 feet.

2. A letter received by Mr Glatte is enclosed."

The enclosure is a letter from a Mr S Kaufman of Belmont, NSW and inquires about the sighting from Mr Glatte.

FINAL COMMENTS:

1. It would appear that the part of Mr Glatte's 29 Oct 1970 typed statement which read in part "..which makes it obvious that it was launched from a sea-going vessel..." is what attracted the attention of the Department of Navy.

2. A search of the Internet for information on aircraft registration VH-ECF (click here) reveals that VH-ECF was indeed a Qantas HS125 aircraft. The notes on this website state, in part, "Qantas airlines smallest ever jet aircraft...The aircraft cockpit was configured to represent a Boeing 707..." There is also a photograph of the aircraft taken in August 1968.

3. Taking into consideration all the information given in the RAAF files, it is reasonable to accept that the object was indeed Qantas aircraft VH-ECF."

Fortean author Mike Dash has tipped me off about an interesting development to one of the most famous MIB cases in the UFO literature; the case of Dr Herbert Hopkins, from Maine. Hopkins had been the consultant hypnotist who had performed the hypnotic regression for the 1975 abduction case in Maine, involving recalled memories of strange, 'mushroom-headed, entities. Mike Dash continues the story in his indispensable book "Borderlands":

"Perhaps the oddest and most detailed of all MIB incidents actually sprang from the Maine encounter of 1975. About six months after the incident had occurred, a local doctor named Herbert Hopkins was alone in his home when he received a call from a man who claimed to be the vice-president of a UFO organisation. The caller had heard that Hopkins had spoken to Stephens and Gray, and asked if he could call to discuss the case. Hopkins agreed, and within a matter of seconds - far more quickly than seemed possible - a man appeared at his back door. Hopkins let him in, for some reason not even asking his name.

"The stranger, he thought, `looked like an undertaker'. He was dressed in a just-pressed black suit, and when he removed his (black) hat, Hopkins saw that he was not only bald, but lacked eyelashes and eyebrows. His face was white, his lips a vivid red, and he asked his questions about the case in a flat, unaccented voice. At one point, while Hopkins was talking, his visitor brushed his gloved hand against his face and the doctor saw with surprise a red smear appear on the back of the glove. The man was wearing lipstick."Then came the threats. First Hopkins's visitor executed a bizarre `conjuring trick', slowly dematerialising a coin the doctor was holding in his own hand, with the comment, 'No one on this plane will ever see that coin again.' Next, Hopkins was told to destroy all the tapes and notes he had made of his meetings with Stephens and Gray. If he did not, the man threatened, his own heart would vanish in the same way that the coin had.'"As he spoke his last words', Hopkins remembered, 'I noticed that his speech was slowing down. A bit unsteadily, he got to his feet and said, very slowly, 'My energy is running low. Must go now. Goodbye.' The man walked woodenly out of the house, towards a bright light that was shining in the driveway, and Hopkins did not see him again."But some new information throws an entirely different light on this account. An internet blog by Hopkins nephew, also called Herbert Hopkins reports that:

"My uncle was, unfortunately, a fantasy-prone individual, craved the center of attention and limelight and on a base level he sometimes just made things up-no matter how hyperbolic-to top everybody else. As brilliant as he was in many areas, however, he was unskilled at fiction.

"And for much of the '70s and 80s, he was an alcoholic. Every night was spent alone with a magnum of wine (he made his own wine, too, in a still in the basement). He would stumble up the stairs at about 5am, tripping over the 'invisible dog'. How did I know about the invisible dog? Well, a handful of times when I was sleeping over I would be awake and hear that tripping and the inevitable curse, "goddamn dog!" The real dog, incidentally, was next to me on the bed, staring out at the hall, wondering what the hell the thud had been." The bottom line for this particular Man in Black tale is unfortunately pretty mundane. This mysterious being in black, inspired by cheap fiction and alcohol, probably less of malicious intent and more from some sad need for attention, was, alas, a simple lie, one that needs to be corrected for those into serious research in this area.

The Hopkins family seem to have been a pretty odd crew, and Harold Jnr. Presents another experience from his rather eccentric relatives. "What seemed kinda creepy to a kid now seems...well, no so much. In fact, it is so full gaps and silliness you have to wonder why some of the legitimate journals on paranormal research would even bother to treat it with any validity.

"The truth is again pretty obvious and simple. But unfortunately mixed with family sadness. Remember the part I mentioned about John not recognizing the couple but bringing them home anyway? At the time, we kids weren't privy to what went on there, but later John told me. John and Maureen were swingers (is that term even still used?) It was fairly common for other couples to be coming and going about that place. As I kid I thought, wow, they sure have a lot of, um, "close" friends. Yep, close. Very close. So that they might have brought home an alien or two...not such a big surprise."

I seem to recall that this incident featured in one of John Keel's reports in "Flying Saucer Review". It also appeared in dramatised form in a remarkable play called "All Along the Watchtowers", performed at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. There was a train stalled on the tracks for a number of hours, and there was no sign of it being repaired. So, onward we went, through some back roads to get to Price Chopper for ice cream. I first noticed what I thought was a red star, but then I noticed that it was moving. To my surprise, I noticed that the alleged star was moving, and moving towards our car. The red-orange light was moving smoothly towards us from the north. It was flying noiselessly and slowly turning southwest. As it was passing overhead, we noticed its wedge shape, similar in shape to a slightly rounded isosceles triangle. We stopped in the middle of an intersection to watch it as it flew over us. Nobody else was on the street. My girlfriend felt unnerved by its silence. I felt excited by the sighting, and wanted to follow it, but as it got closer, I felt a little unnerved as well. We turned east to continue on our errand, and then we turned south. As we turned south, we spotted the object again, flying over the treeline. The object was moving in the same direction that we were traveling. We lost sight of it under the treeline. "I recently heard from a friend about some UFO experiences she encountered. In her email to me, she wrote the following:"

"... re: UFOs....I've seen a few in daylight and quite a few in the night-time sky.... I saw a disc and a large triangular shaped ship in the Sedona, AZ area - the triangular one when out walking on Oak Creek and the disc coming back to Sedona from Cottonwood....there's short stories "[see below]" connected to those; and i saw one disc right outside the window of the airplane I was traveling in going from DC to CA right after we'd gone over the Grand Canyon on a clear turquoise blue-sky day....it was darting from cloud-bank to cloud-bank alongside our plane as we flew thru space...

When I was with the Navajo Elders once, up in the high canyons of the southwest, we'd sit out by the fire at night before bedding down and they'd tell us stories....One night they began to point out the various lights in the canyons and in the sky.

They'd identify the different lights as: ancestors, guardians of a particular area or canyon, and "star people" (they knew who was who in the light-world)....You can recognize the "star people" at night - high up in the sky usually or coming down 'across' the sky - by the zigzag pattern they take, darting across the sky from point a to point b in a zigzag pattern.....A pilot from the Air Force told me once that they use the zigzag pattern to come into our atmosphere as they go thru the dimensional doorways/portals so as not to negatively affect the atmosphere causing harm to our environment or to their aircraft." ~ A. After asking permission from my friend and also asking her to expand on the two stories, she responded with the permission and also the following two stories of UFO encounters.

Story one: Sedona

"I was out on Oak Creek - one of my favorite places - in Sedona, taking a walk along the path. I was observing the different trees, plants, and wildlife I encountered along the way. At one point I saw what I thought was an insect darting about in the sky above my head. I saw flashes of light and assumed it was the sun reflecting off of it's wings as it bounced about.

"I looked closer and focused in on it, thinking at the same time - 'what the heck are YOU?!'.....When i put out that thought (and i'm not exaggerating or embellishing this story) the bouncey thing answered my question and literally came down into my mind's eye, right up close and personal, and clearly showed itself to be a very large, black, triangular shaped ship.

Woh! That startled me, to say the least!...As soon as i'd registered that what i was looking at was NOT an insect just over my head but some kind of ufo way out there in the sky above me, it resumed it's "place" as high up above me rather than up close and personal where i could clearly see what it was. I had tobacco with me and i stepped off the path into an open place in the rocks, out of sight, and began to turn the 4 directions calling in the ancestors and helpers and praying to God.

I asked for protection and support and i turned my back on that 'object' and it's inhabitants, having no intention to be "picked up" and i said so. I'll wait for the B'nai Or, tyvm! and the lightships. I have no desire to ride along in a heavy metal vehicle and i do know there is a difference. I put forth that thought and intention banishing fear from my auric field, and i felt the energy shift and retreat. I continued my walk along the path chanting a song i'd been taught for such occasions and i resumed my journey, enjoying the beauty all around me and pondering the mysteries of this life.

Story two:

One morning i drove over to Cottonwood from Sedona to do some shopping at the local area Wally-world. As i began my return trip driving across the deserted strip from Cottonwood to Sedona, i was watching the sky as i often do for raptors and other birds. I love birds and especially eagles and hawks and often see them on my travels. Since the road was deserted on this clear, sunshiny day, i was taking my time. There is a particular outcropping of rocks and a mountainous formation that juts up out of the desert landscape between Cottonwood and Sedona. It is the only one out there so rather noticeable.

As i neared that area, i clearly saw a large silver disc appear from my right up in the sky. It flew low over my car, straight toward the mountain that was coming up on my left in the distance from the road. I slowed down and watched. That disc flew directly INTO the mountain....NOT "between" rocks or parts of the mountain's rocky surface but directly INTO the face of that mountain! I was astonished and amazed. Wow!...add it to the list of mysteries in Great Mystery's storybook and i got to witness it that day.

The effect of supernatural creep can be seen with UFOs, anomalous natural phenomena (Fortean topics), and in bizarre stories categorized as "high strangeness" (which I'll explain a bit further on in this piece). A perfect example is that of "black dogs" whose appearance is spectral or demonic and is associated with either protection from or nearness of bad spirits. Could it be just a big black dog? Witnesses perceive that it's more than that. When the circumstances feel uncanny, we slip into thoughts of the supernatural. An enjoyable book that illustrates supernatural creep quite nicely is "Three Men Seeking Monsters" by Nick Redfern. Fun stuff.
