Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and human-made sources.
Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.
"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."
First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.
Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).
According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.
The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.
"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.
A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.
Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.
"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Hesman's work was funded in part by NASA's Planetary Astronomy Program in Washington. The CIRS instrument and Celeste spectrometer were built at Goddard.

We all knew it would happen.
At least some of us who've been around Ufology for a while knew it was inevitable: even bloggers who claim membership in our diverse community would snipe at Dr. Edgar Mitchell.
Because of the coverage he received, they got envious, and so they couldn't restrain themselves, they rushed to marginalize his statements. They even insinuated Dr. Mitchell was lying.
Remember, while many of these negative bloggers seem to pack the integrity of a card-carrying Bushee, Edgar Mitchell's integrity has never been questioned by NASA, or anyone else of merit. Mitchell has demonstrated over the decades his integrity and intelligence --showing more of both than all these blogging jackals put together.
Why do UFO researchers and bloggers --who both think there is something significant in UFO phenomenon-- rush to marginalize the statement of an authentic American hero like Dr. Edgar Mitchell?
Because they are jealous. And because they're the psychological type who must be right. And so they lower themselves, and our entire community, by using the same tactics as debunkers. For instance: I've never in my 45 years around the UFO phenomenon read any debunker ever apologize to a UFO witness for any statement they have made which turned out to be wrong. Never! And that profile is a statement of truth unto itself.
And it looks from here like several claimed pro-Ufology bloggers owe one of our great American heroes and greatest astronauts an unconditional apology.
Let's read some of the maneuverings now happening on the dark side:

One of the most popular reasons why some people give interviews ( Dr. Mitchell) and "reveal" information that is designed to attract serious attention, is to promote something (usually a book). So I did a quick search to see if Dr. Mitchell had written any books recently.Mitchell has written two books, the last one in 1996 called "The Way of the Explorer". However, a revised edition of this was released this year and he has been giving a number of interviews just lately.He obviously understands the need to promote books (all authors do) and he gave a lecture at the Roswell 2004 lecture to do just that. Presumably the 1996 version of his book required a little help in getting noticed if it still needed promoting 8 years later? And now we have a revised edition of the same book, which obviously will also require some additional publicity.

Many people I've met have had grand intelligence, but not a bit of common sense. Some of these zero-common sense brainiacs who're also science professionals I've come to call The Robot People. It's important we recognize them, know them for what they are, because The Robot People never see the human part of anything.
The 'Bot People consistently fail one kind of IQ test, though. The Bots Who Blog Among Us still don't get that if you have failed to develop your Emotional IQ, i.e., a baseline awareness of the presenting emotional challenges of the people right there in front of you, and a bit of respect for the courage it takes UFO witnesses and serious researchers to come forward, you are not really working the human side of the street.
And from the science and media sides of the street, if you've failed to account for the Emotional IQ --the fully human aspect of research-- you're just not getting the whole story.

Debunkers say there is no evidence unless you can measure it.
But how can you measure something that is more intelligent than you and doesn't want to be measured?
How can you measure something which is likely of profound national security, wrapped up in secrets and hidden away?
Dr. Mitchell clearly indicates in his phraseology that he does not want to break his oath.
Hey, I'm no rocket scientist, but I can read that.
And Dr. Mitchell never names the individuals directly or the committees or the direct sources. He never includes NASA. He carefully, honorably skirts breaking his official military-US Government oath, while I believe, he is keeping a higher order of oath.
Dr. Mitchell --unlike the Bot People-- is keeping an oath of faith, trust, and loyalty to the Human Race.
We've got massive amounts of evidence coming out. We've got the government cooperating with MUFON. MUFON requested and received the radar tapes from the Stephenville, Texas case. MUFON's evidentiary conclusion: Large UFOs 300 to 500 feet across, traveling 2000 mph... exactly where the good witnesses reported they spotted them.
Am I crazy, but do any of you remember the bloggers --the ones who're supposed to be on our side-- quickly trying to demolish or diminish the Stephenville witness testimony? In the very beginning of Stephenville, snide remarks, star charts and such were rampant in the ufology blogosphere. Witnesses hardly finished telling their stories before attacks began on several claimed pro-ufology blogs!
I know there are debunkers who make a living from this. I get it.
But what are these others trying to do? It's one thing to keep it honest and add a healthy dose of dissent. It's another thing entirely to kill the messenger over and over again, especially when the messenger has demonstrated a lifetime of integrity.
Roswell proved that for these I AM SO RIGHT kind of people, and for the Bot People, multiple witnesses, even deathbed confessions are not enough.
American hero astronaut Edgar Mitchell proves that a life lived with integrity delivers a powerful dimension of believability to witness testimony --so much believability, that professional debunkers, the just plain envious, and the Bots Who Blog Among Us forget themselves, and in their rabid rush to publish, fail to use logic, and risk revealing bad arguments, low-level thought, and a Bonfire of the Vanities-style silliness that probably, in the long view, will turn out to be tragic for us all.

My wife and I were going for a walk around our town as we do frequently in the evenings. It was just turning dusk about 8:45 pm and the sun had already set below the tree line. The sky was very clear with only a thin clouds to the west. I looked up and saw a large bright object in the distance. I didn't think much of it at first since we live near Shaw AFB and see planes all the time. I looked again a few seconds later and noticed it was moving fairly slowly and slowly dimmed and brightened again. Then behind the object appeared two or three small objects - like glitter - blinking faster than the main object but much smaller and dimmer. They appeared red and orange and trailed the main object for two or three minutes. By that point we'd all stopped and were watching trying to figure out what it was. Then we noticed what looked like a cloud started forming around it and a cone-shaped trail appeared. I started thinking maybe it's a meteor and it was just hitting the atmosphere but it never got brighter or turned into a fireball. Then the tail faded (it was only there for maybe 5 seconds) and it continued as it had been. That's when I really thought something was odd because meteors don't just stop falling. We were near a line of trees and the object moved behind them so we hurried over to a nearby baseball field where we could get a better look. It was still visible for a couple of minutes when we got to the field and took a sudden turn away from us (to it's right) and basically continued out of sight. The whole event was at least 15 minutes. When we got home I looked for any footage or pictures of anything similar but didn't find anything. I went to a site that list the dates and times of various launches and did find one in Cape Canaveral, Fl for the same time and date so I'm not sure if that's what we saw. As far as I know those launches don't move horizontally and change directions. If anyone can give me an explanation, I would appreciate it very much.

Ufo Sighting In Highland Park Illinois On August 18Th 2013 Two Bright Star Like Objects Seen Across Lake Michigan
Was in Stevensville, Michigan at my vacation home and I opened the curtains an hour or so after sunset; it's a large bay window that face Lake Michigan. Very little light pollution in this area because it's so rural. Saw a bright light across the lake that didn't look like a star or commercial aircraft. Through binoculars, I saw two bright, star-like objects hovering on the opposite side of the lake (i.e., over Illinois, not Michigan). One of the objects was brighter than the other and slightly above and to our left of it. The objects were too far away to discern details (even through binoculars) but they did not have blinking lights like commercial aircraft and were hovering instead of moving on a linear flight path. The smaller object began to ascend slowly, moving in a few different locations to the left of the larger object. Suddenly, it zoomed off at an incredible speed and disappeared. No idea what they were...there was an air and water show in Chicago this weekend so could be related to that. However, I did see a UFO from my vacation home - also hovering over Lake Michigan - a few years ago. This one had multi-color lights and it changed shapes so quite disimilar from this sighting.

"SPACE BRAKES" are being tested soon at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility using a sounding rocket to loft an experiment to space. The IRVE-3 project is gaining engineering traction for a new inflatable re-entry system development with launch this summer.
If the test proves successful, Orbital Sciences Corporation and NASA Langley Research Center may cooperate on a mission to utilize the Cygnus spacecraft for a recoverable re-entry test. The Cygnus spacecraft successful use of "SPACE BRAKES" would open a NEW CAPABILITY for the space agency and the private sector beyond the successful Dragon re-entry.

Orbital has reviewed a variant of the Cygnus pressured cargo module capable of carrying three or four astronauts, along with a HUMAN-RATED VERSION OF THE ANTARES. The anticipated development costs could be as much as 2-billion.
