BERKELEY, Calif. -- Ever have one of those days where you just wanna be alone, maybe have the planet to yourself?

Well, based on sheer numbers, there may be a planet just for you.

Astronomers at the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Hawaii, using data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, estimate there are tens of billions of Earth-size, possibly habitable planets in our Milky Way galaxy.

Given that there just more than 7 billion of us on this planet, that means a planet for each of us with some spares for your picky neighbors. Or a vacation planet or two for you, maybe.

And the closest may be circling a star you can see if you look up into the heavens tonight.

"When you look up at the thousands of stars in the night sky, the nearest sun-like star with an Earth-size planet in its habitable zone is probably only 12 light years away and can be seen with the naked eye. That is amazing," UC Berkeley graduate student Erik Petigura, the leader of the team that analyzed data from the Kepler, said in a press release.

To be sure, the astronomers haven't seen any of the planets themselves. They came to their conclusions like this:

The Kepler telescope photographed 150,000 of the 300 billion stars in the Milky Way every 30 minutes for four years. It looked for when orbiting planets passed between the camera and the star, causing a slight change in brightness of that star. Analyzing the data, the astronomers say, they found 3,000 planet candidates.

The astronomers narrowed that number by focusing on just 42,000 stars like our sun or a bit cooler. That brought the number of planets down to 603. But only 10 of those were about the size of Earth in the so-called "Goldilocks zone," just the right distance from the star where temperatures are suitable for life as we know it.

So how did they get a number of planets in the billions? By using a computer model with fake planets to test the validity of the algorithms used in the calculations.

"What we're doing is taking a census of extrasolar planets, but we can't knock on every door. Only after injecting these fake planets and measuring how many we actually found could we really pin down the number of real planets that we missed," Petigura said in the press release.

Using the data, the astronomers calculated that 22% of stars in the Milky Way similar to our sun have planets like Earth in their "Goldilocks zone." As there are about 20 billion stars similar to the sun in the galaxy, the possibilities add up quickly -- more than one for each of us Earthlings.

The researchers do caution, though, that despite being in the habitable zone, a planet could still not be right to host life.

"Some may have thick atmospheres, making it so hot at the surface that DNA-like molecules would not survive. Others may have rocky surfaces that could harbor liquid water suitable for living organisms. We don't know what range of planet types and their environments are suitable for life," Gfrey Marcy, UC Berkeley professor of astronomy, said in a press release.

But the study gives researchers a number to work with.

"The primary goal of the Kepler mission was to answer the question: When you look up in the night sky, what fraction of the stars that you see have Earth-size planets at lukewarm temperatures so that water would not be frozen into ice or vaporized into steam, but remain a liquid, because liquid water is now understood to be the prerequisite for life," Marcy said. "Until now, no one knew exactly how common potentially habitable planets were around Sun-like stars in the galaxy."

The new study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and was discussed this week at the second Kepler Science Conference, being held at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.

Also at the gathering, scientists announced the Kepler telescope has found 833 new candidate planets, including 10 that are of the right size and right distance from their stars to host life, adding to ones previously confirmed. That brings the official list to 3,538 planet candidates found using Kepler, according to a NASA press release. Of those, smaller Earth-sized planets are most common, NASA said.

This evening I was inside settling in for the night and something just told me to go and look outside. Every chance I get, I watch the sky, so I immediately looked up when I went out the door. I just wanted to let you know that my wife and I both saw something in the sky the night of April 30, 2013 that was incredible. We saw hundreds of white circular balls of light/orbs all traveling in formation, the same direction, towards the southwest. It was continuous flights for over 2 hours. Nothing could be picked up on my android phone camera since they were traveling up so high. They were all flying at a slow speed with no sound. I know this isn't hard evidence since I was unable to get a video, but I wanted to get the word out there that there are UFO's in massive quantities in Minnesota. I felt excited with what I saw and curious because I've always been a believer of existence of UFO's and other life. I never actually lost sight of the UFO's. After watching hundreds of them pass me overhead for over 2 hours, I finally just went inside and went to bed.

Rather than being seen directly, the new planet candidates were found by Planethunters.org volunteers looking for a telltale dip in the brightness as planets pass in front of their parent stars. One of the 15, a Jupiter-sized planet orbiting a Sun-like star, has been officially confirmed as a planet (with 99.9% certainty) after follow-up work with the Keck telescope in Hawai'i and has been named 'PH2 b'. It is the second confirmed planet to be found by Planethunters.org. 'We are seeing the emergence of a new era in the Planet Hunters project where our volunteers seem to be at least as efficient as the computer algorithms at finding planets orbiting at habitable zone distances from the host stars," said Planethunters lead scientist Professor Debra Fisher of Yale University. Lead author Dr Ji Wang, also of Yale University, said: 'We can speculate that PH2 b might have a rocky moon that would be suitable for life. I can't wait for the day when astronomers report detecting signs of life on other worlds instead of just locating potentially habitable environments. That could happen any day now. These are planet candidates that slipped through the net, being missed by professional astronomers and rescued by volunteers in front of their web browsers," said Lintott." It's remarkable to think that absolutely anyone can discover a planet.' "In general, we have shown that we are not quite as unique as we once thought. Our solar system closely resembles other observable planetary systems within our galaxy. Fortean author Mike Dash has tipped me off about an interesting development to one of the most famous MIB cases in the UFO literature; the case of Dr Herbert Hopkins, from Maine. Mike Dash continues the story in his indispensable book "Borderlands":

"Perhaps the oddest and most detailed of all MIB incidents actually sprang from the Maine encounter of 1975. About six months after the incident had occurred, a local doctor named Herbert Hopkins was alone in his home when he received a call from a man who claimed to be the vice-president of a UFO organisation. The caller had heard that Hopkins had spoken to Stephens and Gray, and asked if he could call to discuss the case. Hopkins agreed, and within a matter of seconds - far more quickly than seemed possible - a man appeared at his back door. Hopkins let him in, for some reason not even asking his name.

"The stranger, he thought, `looked like an undertaker'. He was dressed in a just-pressed black suit, and when he removed his (black) hat, Hopkins saw that he was not only bald, but lacked eyelashes and eyebrows. His face was white, his lips a vivid red, and he asked his questions about the case in a flat, unaccented voice. At one point, while Hopkins was talking, his visitor brushed his gloved hand against his face and the doctor saw with surprise a red smear appear on the back of the glove. The man was wearing lipstick."Then came the threats. First Hopkins's visitor executed a bizarre `conjuring trick', slowly dematerialising a coin the doctor was holding in his own hand, with the comment, 'No one on this plane will ever see that coin again.' Next, Hopkins was told to destroy all the tapes and notes he had made of his meetings with Stephens and Gray. If he did not, the man threatened, his own heart would vanish in the same way that the coin had.'"As he spoke his last words', Hopkins remembered, 'I noticed that his speech was slowing down. A bit unsteadily, he got to his feet and said, very slowly, 'My energy is running low. Must go now. Goodbye.' The man walked woodenly out of the house, towards a bright light that was shining in the driveway, and Hopkins did not see him again."But some new information throws an entirely different light on this account. An internet blog by Hopkins nephew, also called Herbert Hopkins reports that:

"My uncle was, unfortunately, a fantasy-prone individual, craved the center of attention and limelight and on a base level he sometimes just made things up-no matter how hyperbolic-to top everybody else. As brilliant as he was in many areas, however, he was unskilled at fiction.

"And for much of the '70s and 80s, he was an alcoholic. Every night was spent alone with a magnum of wine (he made his own wine, too, in a still in the basement). He would stumble up the stairs at about 5am, tripping over the 'invisible dog'. How did I know about the invisible dog? Well, a handful of times when I was sleeping over I would be awake and hear that tripping and the inevitable curse, "goddamn dog!" The real dog, incidentally, was next to me on the bed, staring out at the hall, wondering what the hell the thud had been." The Hopkins family seem to have been a pretty odd crew, and Harold Jnr. Presents another experience from his rather eccentric relatives. "What seemed kinda creepy to a kid now seems...well, no so much. In fact, it is so full gaps and silliness you have to wonder why some of the legitimate journals on paranormal research would even bother to treat it with any validity.

"The truth is again pretty obvious and simple. But unfortunately mixed with family sadness. Remember the part I mentioned about John not recognizing the couple but bringing them home anyway? At the time, we kids weren't privy to what went on there, but later John told me. John and Maureen were swingers (is that term even still used?) I was reminded today of an interesting phenomenon I observed at the Burlington Vortex Conference when I paid a return visit to the friendly Sci-Fi Cafe in Burlington. MINNEAPOLIS (STARpod.org) -- "The man who reactivated me is... " Uri paused, then he said, "called Ron."I was reading Jon Ronson's book, "THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS". Ronson wrote, "Was Ron FBI? CIA? Military intelligence? Homeland security? Could Ron be MI5? MI6?" "Ah ha!" I thought. "Now it makes sense!" I knew that Ron worked for CIA. And why Uri Geller may have found himself "reactivated" for the war on terror. "This is about what happened when a small group of men -- highly placed within the United States military, the government, and the intelligence services -- began believing in very strange things." Thus begins Jon's Ronson's disturbing and entertaining exploration of high strangeness infecting the US government in his follow-up to his first book "THEM: Adventures with Extremists." "THEM "clearly set the tone for Ronson's unique approach to the sources and methods found in "THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS -- "understated shock and awe tempered by a dry sense of humor in all the right places. When faced with video evidence of alleged mind-control over a small animal, Ronson notes: "It does seem odd... although I have to say that emotions such as circumspection and wariness are not that easy to discern in hamsters." Ronson (who followed in the footsteps of another UK citizen and journalist, Nick Cook of Janes Defence Weekly) was astonished by the fascination high-ranking persons in the United States exhibited over the paranormal. And like Cook and Ronson, who had observed the inexplicable weirdness (which had largely emerged for all to see on the Internet in the 1990s) -- I was also curious about what had inspired strange beliefs in the unreal. Since the mid-1990s I had been exploring far-out science with an eye on future developments. It did appear that an entire industry had developed around improbable imaginary weapons, but what of the impossible? Ronson began by looking into Uri Geller's claims of involvement with American intelligence services. Ronson writes:"The way I saw it, the truth lay in one of four possible scenarios:" (1) It just never happened" (2) A couple of crazy renegades in the higher levels of the U.S. Intelligence Community had brought in Uri Geller." (3) U.S. intelligence is the repository of incredible secrets, which are kept from us for our own good; one of those is that Uri Geller has psychic powers, which were harnessed during the Cold War. They just hoped he wouldn't go around telling everybody." (4) The U.S. Intelligence Community was, back then, essentially nuts through and through." Ronson landed in the midst of the controversy beginning with an interview with former head of military intelligence (INSCOM) Bert Stubblebine and the above mentioned lunch meeting with Uri Geller. In his book Ronson claims "It was Uri Geller who set me on the trail that led to the goats" as he searched for the mysterious "Ron." Ronson never did find "Ron," or at least never admitted as much. I was aware of the connection between Uri and "Ron" ever since "Ron" had responded to an email we had both received less than a year prior to 9/11. That particular email implied a recruitment drive allegedly sanctioned by "Ron." As it turns out, it was not Uri Geller but another associate of "Ron" who sent Ronson on quest to track down "the men who stare at goats." Ronson's big break in the story came from Colonel John B. Alexander, a non-lethal weapons consultant to the government and former associate of Stubblebine at INSCOM. According to Ronson, it was Alexander who named the man that redirected his attention away from current Intelligence Community involvement ("Ron") towards Special Forces, and the allegations of psychic goat-killers. Hold onto the thought that Ronson may have been deliberately sent off on a new vector when he kept asking about "Ron." What fascinated me from the beginning of Ronson's book was his ability to personalize his story and uncover new details. It was also clear that Ronson was not always in-the-know concerning the import of his discoveries. Of Ronson's four possibilities, we can easily rule out number one, as recently declassified files (available to review at STARpod.org) evidence CIA's attempt to recruit Uri Geller for his psychic powers in the early 1970s. Number two can also be ruled out, since the same set of documents, known as the STAR GATE collection, prove that the highest levels of military and intelligence right up to the Vice President's office were well aware of the situation. Number four may also be discarded: evidence exists that interest in the paranormal continues today. Ronson soon learned that not only had the government tasked psychic spies to obtain enemy secrets during the cold war, and even into the Gulf War in the 1990's, but they had pursued the dark side of the force: the willful killing of goats and hamsters with a thought. And, more chillingly, they were interested in "reactivating" the research for the war on terror -- and so, apparently, was al Qaeda. With the stage set under the light of high strangeness and clandestine evil, Ronson goes off the track to explore other equally confusing and disturbing aspects of government involvement with the paranormal and their errant children in the private sector. Throughout the book Ronson invokes the new-age warrior philosophy of the 1st Earth Battalion for guidance, but it is soon apparent that a disturbing darkness lurks beneath the surface. Psychic remote viewers for hire, weird predictions that never come true, and strange UFO death cults are explored as Ronson desperately seeks the unifying narrative to his book. This is new and uncharted territory for Ronson (and for most of his readers) -- thus Ronson weaves back and forth across space, time, and subject matter -- turning over stones big and small to uncover the meaning behind the madness. Psychological operations in Iraq, crazy non-lethal weapons, abusive torture, mind-control projects from the 1950s, subversive subliminal messages, and psychic delusions grow from every crack in the pavement of reason. By the end of "The Men Who Stare at Goats," Ronson begins to see the extent of landscape ahead as if for the first time. Ronson writes: "It seemed remarkable to me that the organizational gap in the intelligence world between the light side (psychic supermen) and the dark side (covert assassination) has been so narrow." Meanwhile, as Ronson was busy tracking down the goats, "Ron" went on his merry way investigating weird science on behalf of the newly formed Office of the Director of National Intelligence, as told in my series "KNOWING THE FUTURE: CIA, 9/11, UFOs, and the Extraterrestrial Presence "(available at STARpod.org). Was Ronson sent on a wild goat chase? Was he set up by cleverly planted intelligence operatives? In the end, does it really matter? It's not a question of whether or not the government has a team of psychic assassins staged to take down any adversary deemed a threat. In the end it comes down to tales of spies and lies, manipulation of the truth, and public oversight. The recent CIA torture scandal is only one small tip of an iceberg of private contractor black-operations protected from the heat of disclosure by national security laws. Is it really worth putting the public mental health at risk by promoting insanity in the interest of national security? How much collateral damage from counterintelligence operations is deemed acceptable? Jon Ronson (and the writer of the fictionalized film version of Ronson's book) wisely understood that humor is the best vaccination to protect one's sanity against the strange and unnatural. By not taking himself too seriously, Ronson has been able to get closer to the strangeness than almost anyone else in recent memory, without being caught up in the paranoia and delusion.
