My family was at a cub scout family night here in Indianapolis watching a projected movie outside. There were several dozen families and approximately 100 total people, although I couldn't say just how many people observed it. We frequently see very strange crafts and lights in our area, but this is the first that I have reported. We were laying on a blanket on the ground, looking at the stars which is a regular activity, especially for my wife and I. There was one star-like object, very much brighter than anything else in the sky which appeared to come closer for a period of time before changing directions and moving farther away. It continued on a relatively straight heading becoming a little smaller in size, then appeared to stop, then start again. Then suddenly moved faster, and just vanished. One minute it was there, then just gone. We were all in amazement at what we were seeing, the whole family witnessing one of these at the same time was a first. As I said, we have seen dozens of objects, unexplained lights, strange moving lights, and such things over the years we have lived in this area. This was a unique sighting, unlike any of the previous ones, and the fact that the object simply vanished was amazing.There were several other strange lights in the area during the night, after this one, none quite as wonderful. I will continue to watch the skies, each opportunity I get. I have known my whole life that we are not the only beings in the vastness of space, and I hope sometime in my lifetime it will be undeniable and proven.

Brazilian UFO Magazine's consultant witnesses the transportation of a strange disk-shaped object in the Brazilian state of Bahia
On Saturday, November 25th, Brazilian UFO Magazine's editor A. J. Gevaerd received a call from Bahia with an intriguing story. The caller was Francisco Baqueiro, a psychologist and therapist, magazine's consultant in abductions, who said to have photographed with his cell phone a strange and perfectly disk-shaped flying object being carried by a non-identified truck in a road in the Brazilian state of Bahia.
The picture was taken on Tuesday, November 21st, at 07:16 AM. Baqueiro said he heard of the transportation one day before when an informer from an intelligence service called him telling an unknown artifact crashed and was recovered in an area in Bahia known as Rec^oncavo Baiano, south of the capital Salvador. The informer also told the object was to be carried from that place to the city of Feira de Santana, nearly 110km from Salvador, through the BR-324, a two-lane road with heavy traffic linking Salvador to that municipality.
Despite the fact that Baqueiro was severely ill with kidney disease, he decided to check what happened.
That Tuesday 21st, shortly after 06:30 AM, the consultant and his wife spotted the truck carrying the object and followed after them. The vehicle stopped at Posto Phoenix, a gas station along that road, 60km far from Salvador and near the entrance to municipalities of Maracangalha and S~ao F'elix. Baqueiro pursued the truck for 15 minutes and reported that it was escorted by four Federal Police cars - two ahead and two behind - which delayed the traffic in the road."I tried to enter the gas station in order to better check what was going on, but was prevented by the federal agents", states the therapist. He also says the truck was very slow in the way and the object on it was so large that the vehicle had to go on at the center of the road. Even though, parts of that fuselage exceeded the truck and touched the trees at the side of the road. "That was certainly too heavy to make a truck go so slow".
Despite the strangeness of that scene, the object was uncovered and totally exposed. "Even with so many cars coming on the opposite way (going to Salvador) and the other ones behind the truck, very few people seemed to care about that scene", Baqueiro says.
After the Federal Police prevented him from entering, he stopped for a few moments near Posto Phoenix and, pretending to be talking on the phone, he took a single shot of the object. "I didn't try others because I didn't want to catch their attention".
Baqueiro sent the picture to the Brazilian UFO Magazine via cell phone, where it was uploaded into a computer and enlarged. Editor Gevaerd and co-editors Marco Petit, Rafael Cury and Claudeir Covo, along with the magazine consultants Fernando Ramalho, Wallacy Albino and Wendell Stein have preliminarily examined the photo.
All were surprised by the image. One of magazine's co-editors and one of its consultants were skeptical and related that image to a similar one found on the Internet some months before. But a careful comparison showed that the object photographed in Bahia is a totally different thing (below). As for the previous picture, nothing came out and there is no information concerning verification of its authenticity.
Francisco Baqueiro - a consultant for the Brazilian UFO magazine for three years - is specialized in alien abductions and continues his search for more information on the fact. Following his editor's advice, he returned to that gas station two more times, but employees seemed to be afraid of talking about the issue. Now Baqueiro tries to find out exactly where the supposed crash might have happened and where the object was taken to. "All I know is the crash was in a sugar cane plantation, but the object was nearly intact".
The region is home to oil refineries, but Baqueiro denies the possibility of confusing a lid for water or fuel tanks with a possible UFO. After having worked for Petrobras, the main oil company in Brazil, he is sure to know such parts very well and they never reach the size of the object seen on the truck. He also rejects the possibility of the object being an attraction from a theme park, since he also knows much of the engineering of one of the largest parks in Bahia.
Right after the controversy reached the Internet, several UFO researchers suggested that the disk-shaped object could be a cover for some liquid container that couldn't be transported assembled, and had to be taken in parts. That, according to a few investigators, would explain why the object was being transported in broad day light with no camouflage or at least some cover on top of it. Nuclear engineer Luiz Carlos C. Pires sent an e-mail positively identifying the disk-shaped object as a cover for a factionary distillation machine, but the discussion is still open. Any information is given to overseas colleagues as to obtain further info that could explain the case.

From earthbound optical telescopes, the surface of Venus is shrouded beneath thick clouds made mostly of carbon dioxide. To penetrate this veil, probes like NASA's Magellan spacecraft use radar to reveal remarkable features of this planet, like mountains, craters, and volcanoes.
Recently, by combining the highly sensitive receiving capabilities of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the powerful radar transmitter at the NSF's Arecibo Observatory, astronomers were able to make remarkably detailed images of the surface of this planet without ever leaving Earth.
The radar signals from Arecibo passed through both our planet's atmosphere and the atmosphere of Venus, where they hit the surface and bounced back to be received by the GBT in a process known as bistatic radar.
This capability is essential to study not only the surface as it appears now, but also to monitor it for changes. By comparing images taken at different periods in time, scientists hope to eventually detect signs of active volcanism or other dynamic geologic processes that could reveal clues to Venus's geologic history and subsurface conditions.
High-resolution radar images of Venus were first obtained by Arecibo in 1988 and most recently by Arecibo and GBT in 2012, with additional coverage in the early 2000s by Lynn Carter of NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The first of those observations was an early science commissioning experiment for the GBT.
"It is painstaking to compare radar images to search for evidence of change, but the work is ongoing. In the meantime, combining images from this and an earlier observing period is yielding a wealth of insight about other processes that alter the surface of Venus," said Bruce Campbell, Senior Scientist with the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. A paper discussing the comparison between these two observations was accepted for publication in the journal "Icarus".
The 100-meter Green Bank Telescope is the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope. Its location in the National Radio Quiet Zone and the West Virginia Radio Astronomy Zone protects the incredibly sensitive telescope from unwanted radio interference, enabling it to perform unique observations.

Other stories of air monsters don't have the popular exposure of those most famous "air monsters" (extraterrestrials and their flying saucers), but they do persist under the radar (so to speak). Thunderbirds are probably the most famous, but pterodactyls also get some attention. I was more familiar with the various hoaxed/art photos of late 19th century slain pterodactyls, kickstarted by an 1890 account of a dragon killed in Arizona. Over a century later, airplane passengers claim to have photographed dragons over Tibet.
But only recently learned that there are ties between the hunt for pterodactyls and creationism. Though it shouldn't have surprised me since I've seen creationists invoke the Loch Ness Monster and other sea serpents, and the Creation Museum is chock full of dinosaurs.

The book is "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base" by journalist Annie Jacobsen (a book that began as a two-part series in the Los Angeles Times Magazine in spring 2009). Jacobsen does as advertised. She had unprecedented access to former workers at the site, who filled her notebooks with details about secret doings (some now unclassified) surrounding everything from atomic bomb blasts to the quest for high-altitude surveillance planes to contemporary stealth technology.
The work is deeply researched and documented through a patchwork of declassified reports that must have been numbing to navigate. Jacobsen converts all that material into a highly readable history that is a dream for aviation and military buffs, packed with anecdotes and characters who built their careers largely among U.S. government "black" operations so secret that even the wives of the participants didn't know what they did for a living.
There also are chilling depictions of the early atomic blasts, which in the years after World War II became something of a Las Vegas tourist attraction as people flocked to watch the mushroom cloud grow above the horizon. Jacobsen writes compellingly about U.S. government tests on everything from the power of the blasts to the effects on living creatures (humans and animals alike) to the radiation left behind.
But the juiciest - and most problematic - bit in the book comes at the end. For decades, UFO believers and conspiracy theorists have wrestled with the story of a flying machine and humanesque, child-sized life forms found near Roswell, N.M., in 1947. No need to belabor all the theories here, since Jacobsen says she has the answer. (And no need for a spoiler alert; she's been talking this up in national media appearances.)
Jacobsen contends, based on interviews with the last surviving member of a five-man covert team that worked on the project, that the flying disk bore Cyrillic markings in Russian. The recovered bodies (two were still alive, but in irreversible comas) were those of children, around age 13, who were rumored to have been horribly transfigured by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, whose grotesque medical experiments on Jews, Gypsies, twins, dwarfs, the mentally deficient and other victims at Auschwitz raised both wartime atrocities and nightmares to new levels.
According to the 60-year-old rumor Jacobsen passes along unconfirmed from her single, unidentified source, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had struck a deal with Mengele to provide him with "aliens," in return for which Mengele would be given a lab and refuge in Russia from postwar prosecutions. Stalin got his aliens but reneged and Mengele famously disappeared into South America.
Jacobsen offers no other supporting material, which is no surprise given how deeply classified the project was. Which, of course, provides the key element of any conspiracy - the inability to find proof proves that a cover-up exists, and there's no need to cover something up if it doesn't exist. The rumor was that he hoped dropping a flying saucer with aliens aboard in the middle of the American Southwest would spawn a panic to echo that of Orson Welles' infamous October 1938 "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast, which sent East Coasters screaming into the streets.
"Truman would see how easily a totalitarian dictator could control the masses using black propaganda," Jacobsen writes. "When it came to manipulating the people's perception, Stalin was the leader with the upper hand."
As far as explanations go, it's not quite as far-fetched as visitors from outer space, but it does stretch credulity. Lord knows, Stalin - who sent millions of his own people to death in spasms of personal paranoia - was capable of the ludicrous. Jacobsen also quotes her source as saying that the U.S. government conducted its own immoral human experiments at Area 51.
But the problem with Jacobsen's presentation is that it is just too thin, relying on a single source nearing his own death passing along what he claims he and his four colleagues had been told about the background to their assignment, which was to figure out how the disk flew (it's unclear whether they succeeded).
Ultimately, Jacobsen presents us with yet another theory, one that feels as questionable as those that preceded it. It's an unfortunate ending to a book that otherwise is an engaging look at the secret world in the Nevada desert.

This report presents the results of an investigation into an interesting incident at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) on November 7, 2006 at about 1615 hrs (4:15 pm) CST that had definite safety implications. A number of highly reliable airline employees and others reported seeing a round, revolving, gray, metallic appearing object [hereafter called an Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP)] hovering approximately above United Airline's Gate C17 in Concourse C at an altitude less than 1,900 feet above ground level (AGL) and departing sometime between 4:18 and 4:33 pm. Since two United taxi mechanics reported seeing the object sometime after 4:00 pm the object could have been present for at least eighteen minutes or more.

Based on multiple eye witness testimony the UAP would have ranged in size from about twenty-two to eighty eight feet diameter. It accelerated at a steep inclined angle through the 1,900 ft cloud base leaving a round hole approximately its own size that lasted for as long as fourteen minutes. This is suggestive of a super heated object or otherwise radiated (microwave) heat energy around 9.4 kJ/m3. According to the FAA nothing was detected by radar at this location or time of day or seen by air traffic controllers from the main tower.
An examination of the radar data supplied by the FAA confirmed the first claim. however, an FAA inbound ground controller remarked about the "UFO" (UAP) at about 3:58:09 pm, long before the object had departed. No reference to a UAP is made by any inbound or outbound flight crew other than two United maintenance taxi mechanics moving an empty airplane to the maintenance hanger on the north side of the airport. Of course this does not mean that there was no object present but only that these flight crew did not discuss it over the radio.
Careful analysis of the situation suggest that a potentially significant air safety problem existed at O'Hare International Airport on the afternoon of November 7, 2006. Anytime an airborne object can hover for several minutes over a busy airport but not be registered on radar or seen visually from the control tower, constitutes a potential threat to flight safety. The identity of the UAP remains unknown. An official government inquiry should be carried out to evaluate whether or not current sensing technologies are adequate to insure against a future incident such as this.
