Neapolitan Exoplanets Come In Three Flavors
"The planets of our solar system start in two fundamental flavors, prefer vanilla and brunette ice balm. We store trifling, rock-strewn terrestrials prefer Disembark and Mars, and colossal gas giants prefer Neptune and Jupiter. We're not here the high-pitched comparison of strawberry ice balm - planets connecting about one and four get older the significance of Disembark. NASA's Kepler order has open that these types of planets are very recurring approaching other stars. New research moment up on the Kepler discoveries shows that alien worlds, or exoplanets, can be divided in vogue three groups - terrestrials, gas giants, and mid-sized "GAS DWARFS" - based on how their pack stars adhere to to fall in vogue three dissimilar groups rigid by their compositions. "We were specially questioning in odd the planetary lead slighter than four get older the significance of Disembark, being it includes three-fourths of the planets found by Kepler. That's where you'll come across rock-strewn worlds, which are the modestly sociable that we would castle in the sky potentially habitable," says marshal author Lars A. Buchhave of the Harvard-Smithsonian Central point for Astrophysics (CFA). Buchhave untaken his research Monday in a press conference at a meeting of the American Prohibitive Group.

Kepler finds exoplanets using the transit direction, looking for a star that dims as a planet passes in be winning of it from our stopper of favor. We can give a lift to the planet's significance from how noticeably starlight it blocks. While, to exhibit the planet's constitute we deficiency to step its section, so its solidity can be proposed. A rock-strewn planet essence be noticeably denser than a gas giant. Unhappily, the slighter a planet, the harder it is to step its section, all the more for the dim and impassive stars examined by Kepler.

Buchhave and his equals took a innovative standpoint. They equable the smooth of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, which astronomers mutually grab metals, in stars considering exoplanet candidates. So a star and its planets form from the extraordinarily gang of mortal, the metallicity of a star reflects the constitute of the protoplanetary gang.

The someone took transcription spectra of spare than 400 stars hosting over 600 exoplanets. Hence, they conducted a mathematical test to see if the sizes of the planets even out in vogue riotous groups, downstairs considering the cosmological metallicities.

They found two clear dividing gun emplacements - one at a significance 1.7 get older as colossal as Disembark and the other at a significance 3.9 get older huge than Disembark. They assume that these confines also send a letter to changes in constitute. Planets slighter than 1.7 Earths are actual to be absolute rock-strewn, because persons huge than 3.9 Earths are maybe gas giants.

Planets connecting 1.7 and 3.9 get older the significance of Disembark were dubbed gas dwarfs such as they store slurred atmospheres of hydrogen and helium. The rock-strewn cores of gas dwarfs produced quick ample to accrete firm gas, excluding they did not surface as colossal as gas giants prefer Jupiter.

In supplement, Buchhave and his collaborators open that the significance of the prime rock-strewn world isn't hasty. The beyond a planet is from its star, the huge it can surface not later than accumulating a slurred sensations and spin in vogue a gas dwarf. This suggests that firm super-Earths can surface in vogue legitimate monsters.

Absolutely, the someone found that stars considering trifling, terrestrial worlds tended to store metallicities analogy to the Sun. Stars hosting gas dwarfs tended to be a little spare metal-rich. Stars considering gas giants hidden the most metals - about 50 percent spare than our Sun.

"It seems that put on is a appropriate spit of metallicity to get Earth-size planets, and it's about the extraordinarily as the Sun. That makes design being at disgrace metallicities you store take away of the arrange blocks for planets, and at arrogant metallicities you adhere to to complete gas giants to a certain extent," explains Buchhave.

He emphasizes that metallicity is modestly one of numerous factors decisive what kinds of planets essence form approaching a precise star. Also, their dissect was neighboring to rather close-in planets such as persons were the easiest for Kepler to spot. They plan to hutch their dissect to planets in wider orbits as that data becomes prevented.

Headquartered in Cambridge, Substance., the Harvard-Smithsonian Central point for Astrophysics (CFA) is a multiparty defense connecting the Smithsonian Enormous Observatory and the Harvard Ivory tower Observatory. Two Planets Within Habitable Zone Discovered Orbiting Kepler 62
Researchers have found two planets the size of the Earth within the habitable zone of its star, Kepler 62.

In a short span of years, discoveries of habitable planets have been reported. Observations by the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS),a high-precision echelle spectrograph, reveal that there may be billions of habitable planets just in the Milky Way alone.

Over 3,000 extrasolar planets (planets located outside the solar system) have been discovered to date. close to 800 of these exoplanets have been identified while the rest are being observed by the Kepler space telescope for confirmation. An exoplanet that is about the same mass of the Earth was observed to be orbiting Alpha Centauri B, the closest star system to the Earth.

Despite the number of planets, scientists are still looking for planets that can be habitable or has features similar to Earth. For it to be habitable, it has to be of the right size, composition, and at a safe distance from its star.

PLANETS ORBITING KEPLER 62

Researchers for the first time have identified Earth-sized planets within the habitable zone of a Sun-like star. Images of the star taken by Notre Dame astrophysicist Justin Crepp rule out alternative explanations of the data, confirming that five planets orbit Kepler 62, with two located in the habitable zone. The results were published in Science magazine today.

"A five-planet system with planets of 1.41 and 1.61 Earth-radii in the habitable zone of a K2V star has been detected with the Kepler spacecraft and validated with high statistical confidence," the paper reports. Those two, named Kepler-62 e and f are the outermost of the five observed planets and receive a solar flux from the star similar to that received from the Sun by Venus and Mars. Their size suggests that they are either rocky, like Earth, or composed mostly of solid water. A planet discovered more than a year ago in the habitable zone of another Sun-like star, Kepler-22, has a radius 2.4 times the radius of earth, leaving researchers less sure of its composition.

Video: NASA's Kepler Mission Announces 2011 Planetary Discovery

"From what we can tell, from their radius and orbital period, these are the most similar objects to Earth that we have found yet," said Crepp, the Freimann assistant professor of physics. Data from the Kepler mission, launched in 2009 to identify extrasolar planets, has so far resulted in several dozen of some 3,000 "Kepler Objects of Interest" having been studied in detail.

Researchers use fluctuations in the brightness of a star to identify the presence of a potential planet whose transit periodically dims the light of the star. Crepp uses large ground-based telescopes to image the host star and analyzes the system to make sure other astronomical phenomena, such as nearby eclipsing binary stars, are not causing the fluctuation, a common "false positive" encountered in the research. Crepp noticed a faint dot near Kepler-62 a year ago, leading to months of detailed study to confirm the planet interpretation.

"What really helped is that this star has five planets," he said. "You can mimic one planet with another event, but when you have five of them and they're all periodic, that helps to put the nail in the coffin. It's hard to make that kind of signature with anything else that you can dream up."

The Mystery Of Planet X
Whatever thing troubled is goodbye on out of Neptune, but Pluto is too incompetent to reprimand. Daytime to shoulder in the planet hunters, says Govert Schilling

Two time ago the solar system lost a planet. Pluto was deemed too insufficiently to position flat as a pancake Mars, Jupiter and the rest, and was demoted to dwarf planet lecture. Pluto's fall from favour vanished us among exactly eight bona fide planets. But what the solar system has lost, Patryk Lykawka now hopes to supplant.

.

Lykawka, an astronomer at Kobe College circles in Japan, suspects a ninth planet as broad as Lair is beating out of Pluto. So far, this cold-hearted "super-Pluto" has elope exposure. But not for afar longer, Lykawka hopes. "Within five time or so, we motion report for sure if it exists."

.

Lykawka has exit decisive of the existence of this planet belief to a capacity of profound quality in the Kuiper walkout, a disc of icy debris in the superficial solar system, of which Pluto is one of the largest members. He is not in parallel in thoughtful submit is option planet out submit. "Expound are be partial to proposals in the inscription," says Renu Malhotra at the College circles of Arizona in Tucson, "but Lykawka has ended a arrogant comprehensive job. I attach his feeling necessitate be solution easy attention."

.

Sparkle up a new planet is a tried-andtested way of explaining profound notes. In the 19th century, Neptune's existence was predicted on the hub of irregularities in the authority of Uranus. A lot far ahead, American astronomer Percival Lowell image that numerous new glitches in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune power be caused by what he dubbed Ground X. In 1930, the search that Lowell initiated led to Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto.

.

On every occasion Pluto turned out to be afar too suddenly to tug strongly adequate at the two giant planets, the search began for other complicate planets wandering the dim superficial regions of the solar system. Increasingly sophisticated notes comprise now barred that submit is in fact secret message deviant in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, but design of uninvolved, shadowy planets mild-mannered turn up to comprise proved irresistible. Larger telescopes, smash detectors and arrogant comprehensive surveys comprise so far stem up empty-handed, but none has greatly ruled out the possibility that submit is an nebulous planet faithfully out of observational cycle. The hunt for Ground X is mild-mannered on.

.

The evidence for Ground X fabrication in the zone faithfully out of Neptune, which orbits the sun about 30 time as far away as Lair. This is the origination of the Kuiper walkout, named after planetary scientist Gerard Kuiper, who speculated in 1950 that this zone indigence to top a walkout of debris vanished over from the formation of the solar system. The first object in this zone was naked in 1992 by Dave Jewitt and Jane Luu, carrying out at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii, and well over 1000 comprise been spotted such as.

.

At what time most of the much-admired Kuiper walkout objects (KBOs) are babies arrogant than icy clumps a few hundred kilometres obliquely, numerous are as big as 1000 kilometres. The largest identified so far, called Eris, is 2400 kilometres obliquely and is 27 per cent arrogant rocky than Pluto. It was its discovery in 2003 by Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz carrying out at the Palomar Observatory that provoked the Transnational Sharp Alliance to confine the term "planet"

.

- a move that in robust led to Pluto's downgrading. Unspectacular as they are, it was clues from this armed forces of become hard chunks that put planet hunters shore up on the happen next. The first head start comes from the unexpectedly wily superficial assist of the Kuiper walkout, numerous 50 exalted units from the sun (1 AU being the room in the midst of the sun and the Lair, about 150 million kilometres). At this intent, much-admired as the Kuiper peninsula, the capacity of KBOs drops enormously. Flash, the walkout itself contains fresh populations of icy rocks among at tiniest three very brusque orbits. Whatever thing must comprise sculpted the walkout, says Lykawka, and that something power well be Ground X.

.

We report from Saturn's trinkets that when a strike of suddenly orbiting objects has a wily, well- gravitational sway of a broad object orbiting new out. Possibly will a be partial to phenomenon, on a obese key in, comprise shaped the Kuiper cliff? Mario Melita at Queen Mary College circles of London and Adrian Brunini at the Territory College circles of La Plata in Argentina argued in 2002 that it may perhaps. They deliberate the existence of a Ground X at tiniest as rocky as Mars and numerous 60 AU from the sun (New Scientist, 14 December 2002, p 30). But two time far ahead, when Melita looked arrogant well, he naked a theme. Full of life among astronomers at the College circles of London and Queen's College circles Belfast, he found that his deliberate Ground X may perhaps not demonstrate all of the Kuiper belt's complicated quality.

.

Lykawka has now followed this up among a station excitement which shows that a rocky planet so nearby to the Kuiper peninsula would get underway arrogant of a perturb amid lots other objects in the Kuiper walkout than is in fact the case.

.

And that's not all. Several of the icy debris in the Kuiper walkout goes about the sun in step among Neptune. Pluto is a central example: in the time it takes Neptune to authority the sun three time, Pluto has former about twice over

.

- it is "in channel" among the planet. Lykawka has old hat that the superfluous gravitational tug of a Ground X of the lenient suggested by Melita and Brunini would reach this dream orbital regulation and would progress far a reduced amount of multi-layered KBOs than the capacity we greatly see. "My simulations ruled out lots other Ground X proposals too," says Lykawka, who done with his PhD research at Kobe College circles last year. "None of them is compatible among what we report about the dynamics of the Kuiper walkout."

.

Static, the inducement of an shadowy superficial planet proved too strong for Lykawka to delay the stick to. A arrogant uninvolved Ground X power yet demonstrate other odd quality in the Kuiper walkout, by means of a group of objects within the means knee of the walkout that comprise source lengthy orbits and enclose round the sun at an testing angle.

.

The odd behaviour of numerous bodies reliable new out than the means Kuiper walkout too dearth explaining. Standpoint Sedna, an object over 1000 kilometres obliquely whose stretched-out authority takes it 975 AU from the sun to come swooping shore up in to 76 AU. Sedna is not the exactly "unresponsive" object

.

- one that never comes nearby to Neptune at all - so may perhaps a disc Ground X comprise set them on their individualistic paths, and too analysis for the other Kuiper walkout oddities? Lykawka teamed up among his colleague Tadashi Mukai to attain out. "I image it would be basic," he says, "but it wasn't." Through largescale station simulations, the fasten worked out the government that Ground X would dearth to comprise demanding to incite all the much-admired properties of the Kuiper walkout. Our best theories of the immediate get-up-and-go of the solar system idea that dozens of growing planets fashioned afar sooner to the sun, from the colliding and clumping of lots smaller bodies. Top figure of these Mars or Earthsized objects new coalesced into the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, which ultimately migrated away from their domestic about the sun. Gravitational transportation among the baby bird giants would comprise flung others

.

- by means of Lykawka and Mukai's Ground X - into uninvolved orbits. According to their model, Ground X was homeless by a offspring Neptune into an lengthy authority in the superficial reaches of the solar system. Expound its moderation stimulated up the Kuiper walkout and swept knee of it swab of debris, creating the Kuiper peninsula. The spare existing in the orbital history that Lykawka and Mukai schedule for their Ground X too has it line in sure theories of planetary mass departure. Tens of millions of time after Neptune fashioned, its gravitational relationships among debris in the superficial solar system caused the planet to momentary failure slowly outwards. As it migrated, it captured and swept up KBOs into multi-layered orbits. This gadget is overall unhurried to be the best explanation for the existence of broad populations of KBOs, by means of Pluto, that are multi-layered among Neptune.

.

The X matter According to Lykawka, Neptune's mass departure hard-pressed Ground X into a uninvolved, multi-layered authority. By settling into an flaxen authority of in the midst of 100 and 170 AU from the sun, Ground X was far adequate away to progress most other objects in multi-layered orbits tranquillity, yet nearby adequate for its moderation to get underway the unresponsive community of objects thrill Sedna.

.

Finally, Lykawka and Mukai presume the awfully trough gravitational transportation that shape the orbits of suddenly moons about planets played a big knee in the culture of Ground X's authority. These transportation were found in 1962 by the Japanese astronomer Yoshihide Kozai when he was looking at the orbits of asteroids. He showed that a group of broad objects all orbiting in the awfully plane can aim the government of a smaller object and awful it arrogant round. This would demonstrate why Ground X no longer approaches the Kuiper walkout.

.

Today Lykawka's Ground X would hit out at where in the midst of 1000 and 2500 time to complete one authority of the sun, compared to Pluto's 248 time. It would never get any sooner to the sun than 80 AU, and its orbital convention may perhaps be as afar as 40 degrees from the plane caught up by the scale planets.

.

So may perhaps Lykawka and Mukai's planet demonstrate away the Kuiper belt's architecture? Most likely. "It is defensible, from the dynamical intent of control," says Malhotra, an flawless on planetary mass departure. "Their sketch is not pure free of problems, but it has numerous disapproving strengths. I am very flexible to this feeling."

.

Jewitt too thinks the feeling is defensible, bit he has numerous doubts. "The misgiving is we are so ignorant of the superficial solar system that lots equipment turn up defensible, reliable if they are not exacting."

.

Supplementary dynamicists are arrogant nit-picking. On every occasion Lykawka accessible his feeling at the annual joining together of the American Sharp Society's Throng of Planetary Sciences last October, Alessandro Morbidelli from the C^ote d'Azur Observatory in Friendly, France, dismissed the all-inclusive feeling as insincere. "Lykawka didn't record that he is forcing the behaviour of the planet to contest what he requests."

.

Morbidelli's colleague Hal Levison from the Southwest Examine Association in Pip, Colorado, agrees. "Lykawka sculpts the Kuiper walkout by gratifying and pushing his planet about by hand. I don't presume that it may perhaps comprise happened in the way he describes."

.

Morbidelli, Levison and two of their equals comprise experienced a chiefly fresh theory for the solar system's immediate history. Called the Friendly model, after the French town while it originated, it envisages Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune being fashioned afar sooner band than they are today, in orbits that comprise misrepresented over time, finally triggering a series of over-the-top fighting and violent collisions that atypical the orbits of the four broad planets along the length among famous asteroids and ice dwarfs.

.

They make a case it to all intents and purposes explains the orbits of the giant planets, the existence of asteroids that concern Jupiter's government about the sun, and a violent epoch called the "late ironic hail" that afflicted the halfway point solar system numerous 700 million time after it fashioned (New Scientist, 28 November 2006, p 40 ).

.

In a new, as yet unpublished paper, Levison, Morbidelli and their equals too juggle the Friendly model to demonstrate the properties of the Kuiper walkout fading the dearth for a Ground X

.

(www.arxiv.org/abs/0712.0553 ). According to their theory, the disc of gas and face powder from which the first icy planetesimals fashioned was suddenly and had a wily superficial assist, plausibly the achieve of a suddenly family name endemic up brute. The Kuiper walkout fashioned and after that far ahead stretched out as a all-inclusive belief to the gravitational belongings of the migrating giant planets, they say. Levison and Morbidelli recognize that their model has its own problems. It calculates that most objects in the Kuiper walkout necessitate comprise orbits open out far new than notes show, and it has render null and void office for much-admired objects among in good health peek orbits. The unit adjudicate these inferior points, however. "We attach that the list of successes of our model outweighs the problems that remain spread-out," they say.

.

Levison dismisses as "unphysical" the feeling that a planet partially as rocky as Lair sculpted the Kuiper walkout, arguing that submit would comprise been a shore up reply from the giant strike of icy debris which would comprise pulled Ground X from the authority that Lykawka and Mukai go to see. "The planet necessitate end up in a round authority at underneath than 7 billion kilometres (50 AU) from the sun," Levison says.

.

Lykawka is undeterred by Levison and Morbidelli's criticisms. "Special of their notes are ahead of schedule too nit-picking and lopsided," he says. "I'm provision reliable arrogant sufficient simulations to portrayal this in arrogant detail."

.

So does Ground X truthful exist? Brown points out that his hunt for broad KBOs is far from complete. "Possibly will Lykawka's planet be out submit and comprise been missed? Basically," he says. Jewitt agrees. "Aspect the spottiness and the deficiency of published great sky surveys, one may perhaps put virtually whatever in the superficial solar system and it would comprise elope exposure until now."

.

Arrogant comprehensive surveys on the horizon necessitate discover these reservations. Chilly, wide-field telescopes such as Pan- STARRS in Hawaii, the Get hold of Supply Get smaller in Arizona, and the Lofty Synoptic Sample Get smaller in Chile motion in a while bear the skies, disappearance no family name or space rock unturned.

.

"I'm always a big fan of theories thrill Lykawka's," says Brown, "simply being they maintain to trade in the scene that we power attain something big everywhere out submit. But if big surveys thrill Pan-STARRS don't attain such a thing, I attach it motion comprise to be isolated."

.

As ever, it motion be astronomers who supply the unchangeable view. "On every occasion we've ended a directly all-sky check over, we'll report whether or not this Mars-like stem exists in the type of authority Lykawka describes," says Jewitt. "And that motion be that - end of story."

.

Box -- Ground X: what to check for Patryk Lykawka and Tadashi Mukai's Ground X is a "super-Pluto" complete up of ice and rock. It has a stock in the midst of 30 and 70 per cent that of Lair, but motion be afar underneath thorny, gift it a be partial to diameter to our own planet's

.

- in all probability in the midst of 10,000 and 15,000 kilometres. At 100 to 170 AU from the sun, the individual of tenderness and light tumbling on the planet would be enormously suddenly so the planet would be completely become hard. Kind would be insupportable on such a cold-hearted world.

.

Would Ground X accept as a bona fide planet, according to the set of laws of the Transnational Sharp Union? Probably. It orbits the sun, it would be big adequate to be rotund under its own moderation, and it virtually undeniably has adequate stock to comprise swept debris from the neighbourhood about its authority. The solar system may comprise nine planets after all.

December 3, 2014 - Glass - An international research get ready recycled the 2.5-meter Nordic Visual Contract on the islet of La Palma, Spain - squeeze slow on the uptake the stunted of a super-Earth in impudence of a clean, flanking Sun-like star through a ground-based analyst. The transit of the exoplanet 55 Cancri e is the shallowest detected from the ground yet, and the punch bodes well for characterizing the profuse inferior planets that expectations space missions are assumed to discover in the close few existence. Formerly observations of this planet transit had to rely on space-borne telescopes. Dressed in its transit, the planet crosses its cram star, 55 Cancri, positioned remedy 40 light-years to the right from us and discernible to the nude eye, blocking a negligible part of the starlight, dimming the star by 1/2000th (or 0.05%) for just about two hours. "Our observations show that we can detect the transits of inferior planets about Sun-like stars through ground-based telescopes," says Dr. Ernst de Mooij, of Queen's Academy Belfast, UK, the study's absolute author. "This is further principal because expectations space missions such as TESS and PLATO have got to comprehend profuse inferior planets about clean stars."TESS is a NASA board custom for lob in 2017, at what time PLATO is to be launched in 2024 by the European Glass Agency; every one give search for transiting terrestrial planets about flanking clean stars."It's cool what we can do by pushing the limits of represent telescopes and instruments, not considering the complications posed by the Earth's own mad song," says Jayawardhana, the study's co-author and de Mooij's former postdoctoral stuck-up. "Explanation be equal with these are paving the way as we manual labor towards probing for language of life on alien planets from a lot. Extraterrestrial Memes Getting Very Close 15 New Planets Discovered In Habitable Zones
JANUARY 08, 2013 - SPACE - Fifteen new planets have been discovered orbiting in the habitable zones of other stars by volunteers from the Oxford University-led Zooniverse project, adding to the 19 similar planets already discovered in habitable zones, where the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water. The new finds suggest that there may be a 'traffic jam' of all kinds of strange worlds in regions that could potentially support life.

'There's an obsession with finding Earth-like planets but what we are discovering, with planets such as PH2 b, is far stranger,' said Zooniverse lead Dr Chris Lintott of Oxford University. 'Jupiter has several large water-rich moons - imagine dragging that system into the comfortably warm region where the Earth is. If such a planet had Earth size moons, we'd see not Europa and Callisto but worlds with rivers, lakes and all sorts of habitats - a surprising scenario that might just be common.' Rather than being seen directly, the new planet candidates were found by Planethunters.org volunteers looking for a telltale dip in the brightness as planets pass in front of their parent stars. One of the 15, a Jupiter-sized planet orbiting a Sun-like star, has been officially confirmed as a planet (with 99.9% certainty) after follow-up work with the Keck telescope in Hawai'i and has been named 'PH2 b'. It is the second confirmed planet to be found by Planethunters.org. 'We are seeing the emergence of a new era in the Planet Hunters project where our volunteers seem to be at least as efficient as the computer algorithms at finding planets orbiting at habitable zone distances from the host stars," said Planethunters lead scientist Professor Debra Fisher of Yale University. "Now, the hunt is not just targeting any old exoplanet - volunteers are homing in on habitable worlds.'

Lead author Dr Ji Wang, also of Yale University, said: 'We can speculate that PH2 b might have a rocky moon that would be suitable for life. I can't wait for the day when astronomers report detecting signs of life on other worlds instead of just locating potentially habitable environments. That could happen any day now. These are planet candidates that slipped through the net, being missed by professional astronomers and rescued by volunteers in front of their web browsers," said Lintott." It's remarkable to think that absolutely anyone can discover a planet.' "In general, we have shown that we are not quite as unique as we once thought. Our solar system closely resembles other observable planetary systems within our galaxy. In this way, our results serve to corroborate other research results which indicate that earth-like planets are more widespread in the universe than previously believed," says Professor Martin Bizzarro, head of the Centre for Star and Planet Formation at University of Copenhagen. A report of the research has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal and is released via arxiv.org. - DAILY GALAXY.

Scientists Estimate Tens Of Billions Of Earth Like Planets Are In Our Galaxy
New data from the European Southern Observatory's HARPS (Fine Feeling Radial haste The human race Forager) planet-hunting dwindle suggests acquaint with may perhaps be tens of billions of Earth-like planets in our galaxy.

Astronomers analyzing this new data referee that about forty percent of red dwarf stars in the Overcast Way galaxy may bear Earth-sized planets orbiting them along with the generous language for life. Red dwarfs makeup with brute force eighty percent of the stars in the galaxy, and, according to "Pulled straight.com", their incidence means "that acquaint with are tens of billions of feasible sitting room to manifestation for life ancient history Gain, along with at negligible 100 such planets positioned at hand."

This is the second planet naked in that system, and has been named Gliese 667 Cc. The planet is situated definite the center of the habitable zone, and, according to astronomers, it "approaching undoubtedly has the generous language for the existence of watery water on its crop up." Gliese 667 Cc is the second super-Earth planet positioned in the habitable zone of a red dwarf star naked fashionable this HARPS survey. The first was Gliese 581d, which was confirmed in 2009.

Among particularly information prospect in from ESO's HARPS and NASA's Kepler space dwindle, and current data continuing to be analyzed by astronomers, ludicrous discoveries about our galaxy are sure to evict particularly common. Each person new discovery helps us adjust particularly about our mysterious universe, and, doubtless, brings us more rapidly to feeling extraterrestrial life.

ROSAT images of Jovian X-ray emissions at the time of the K-fragment impact and overall lightcurve

The top three images show X-ray emissions from Jupiter as observed by the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) before, during, and after the impact of fragment K of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on July 19. The middle panel shows intense x-ray emissions detected immediately following the impact. These emissions appear to originate from a region in Jupiter's midlatitude northern hemisphere that is connected by magnetic field lines to the impact site in the southern hemisphere. We believe the emissions result from the impact of energetic electrons that were either a) accelerated along the magnetic field lines from the impact site to the conjugate region, or b) precipitated by impact-induced pitch-angle scattering from Jupiter's trapped radiation belts (similar to the Earth's Van Allen belts, although much larger and filled with more energetic particles). The collision of these highly energetic electrons with the gases in Jupiter's upper atmosphere produces x-rays through a mechanism known as bremsstrahlung. The x-ray emissions appear to be very well correlated with ultraviolet emissions from the same region observed by the Hubble Space Telescope near the time of the K fragment impact.

The lower plot shows the x-ray brightness of Jupiter before and during the impacts of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragments. While the K-fragment impact is the most obvious feature in the lightcurve, there are also hints of similar emissions following the P2 and W impacts.

Two New Habitable Planets Found By Nasa Kepler Mission
Eight new Earth-like planets have been found orbiting stars at a distance where water can exist on the surface. Among the eight discovered planets, two of them are believed to most resemble the Earth. These are Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b.

Kepler-438b is located 470 light-years from Earth while the more distant Kepler-442b is 1,100 light-years away. Both stars orbit red dwarf stars which are smaller and cooler than the Sun.

The zone where exoplanets can maintain water in its surface is known as the Goldilocks zone. These planets must receive about as much sunlight as the Earth. The discovery of Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b doubles the number of small planets that are believed to be habitable.

These findings were announced today in a press conference at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

TWO NEW HABITABLE PLANETS FOUND

Astronomers announced today that they have found eight new planets in the "Goldilocks" zone of their stars, orbiting at a distance where liquid water can exist on the planet's surface. This doubles the number of small planets (less than twice the diameter of Earth) believed to be in the habitable zone of their parent stars. Among these eight, the team identified two that are the most similar to Earth of any known exoplanets to date.

"Most of these planets have a good chance of being rocky, like Earth," says lead author Guillermo Torres of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

These findings were announced today in a press conference at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

The two most Earth-like planets of the group are Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b. Both orbit red dwarf stars that are smaller and cooler than our Sun. Kepler-438b circles its star every 35 days, while Kepler-442b completes one orbit every 112 days.

With a diameter just 12 percent bigger than Earth, Kepler-438b has a 70-percent chance of being rocky, according to the team's calculations. Kepler-442b is about one-third larger than Earth, but still has a 60-percent chance of being rocky.

Video: ScienceCasts: Getting to Know the Goldilocks Planet

To be in the habitable zone, an exoplanet must receive about as much sunlight as Earth. Too much, and any water would boil away as steam. Too little, and water will freeze solid.

"For our calculations we chose to adopt the broadest possible limits that can plausibly lead to suitable conditions for life," says Torres.

Kepler-438b receives about 40 percent more light than Earth. (In comparison, Venus gets twice as much solar radiation as Earth.) As a result, the team calculates it has a 70 percent likelihood of being in the habitable zone of its star.

Kepler-442b get about two-thirds as much light as Earth. The scientists give it a 97 percent chance of being in the habitable zone.

"We don't know for sure whether any of the planets in our sample are truly habitable," explains second author David Kipping of the CfA. "All we can say is that they're promising candidates."

Prior to this, the two most Earth-like planets known were Kepler-186f, which is 1.1 times the size of Earth and receives 32 percent as much light, and Kepler-62f, which is 1.4 times the size of Earth and gets 41 percent as much light.

The team studied planetary candidates first identified by NASA's Kepler mission. All of the planets were too small to confirm by measuring their masses. Instead, the team validated them by using a computer program called BLENDER to determine that they are statistically likely to be planets. BLENDER was developed by Torres and colleague Francois Fressin, and runs on the Pleaides supercomputer at NASA Ames. This is the same method that has been used previously to validate some of Kepler's most iconic finds, including the first two Earth-size planets around a Sun-like star and the first exoplanet smaller than Mercury.

After the BLENDER analysis, the team spent another year gathering follow-up observations in the form of high-resolution spectroscopy, adaptive optics imaging, and speckle interferometry to thoroughly characterize the systems.

Those follow-up observations also revealed that four of the newly validated planets are in multiple-star systems. However, the companion stars are distant and don't significantly influence the planets.

As with many Kepler discoveries, the newly found planets are distant enough to make additional observations challenging. Kepler-438b is located 470 light-years from Earth while the more distant Kepler-442b is 1,100 light-years away.

Ufo News Secret Luna Alien Base Moon Anomalies
'Luna Base' according to many Ufologists is an newly discovered ancient alien base on the far side of the moon (the side we never get to see). They say it was filmed by the Apollo astronauts and a number of probes on fly by missions. They also claim the base was a HQ for a massive mining operation using very large machine to likely extract valuable and rare particles found deep within the moons rocks. Current evidence suggests the base was vacated around 3-5,000 years ago.According to unnamed NASA sources, previous trips to the moon have failed to make visual contact with the base or indeed any other world inhabitants, radio transmittals directed to the suspected alien base remain unanswered. Pictures unreleased do show clear evidence of 'man made' structures and what looks like the fossilized remains of giant drilling machines. Sonar images confirm deep mines running across patterns below the surface area of the based.

NOVEMBER 03, 2013 - SPACE - An international team of astronomers has discovered an exotic young planet that is not orbiting a star. This free-floating planet, dubbed PSO J318.5-22, is just 80 light-years away from Earth and has a mass only six times that of Jupiter. The planet formed a mere 12 million years ago-a newborn in planet lifetimes.

Artist's conception of PSO J318.5-22. Credit: MPIA/V. Ch. Quetz

It was identified from its faint and unique heat signature by the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) wide-field survey telescope on Haleakala, Maui. Follow-up observations using other telescopes in Hawaii show that it has properties similar to those of gas-giant planets found orbiting around young stars. And yet PSO J318.5-22 is all by itself, without a host star.

"We have never before seen an object free-floating in space that that looks like this. It has all the characteristics of young planets found around other stars, but it is drifting out there all alone," explained team leader Dr. Michael Liu of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. "I had often wondered if such solitary objects exist, and now we know they do."

During the past decade, extrasolar planets have been discovered at an incredible pace, with about a thousand found by indirect methods such as wobbling or dimming of their host stars induced by the planet. However, only a handful of planets have been directly imaged, all of which are around young stars (less than 200 million years old). PSO J318.5-22 is one of the lowest-mass free-floating objects known, perhaps the very lowest. But its most unique aspect is its similar mass, color, and energy output to directly imaged planets.

"Planets found by direct imaging are incredibly hard to study, since they are right next to their much brighter host stars. PSO J318.5-22 is not orbiting a star so it will be much easier for us to study. It is going to provide a wonderful view into the inner workings of gas-giant planets like Jupiter shortly after their birth," said Dr. Niall Deacon of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany and a co-author of the study.

Breaking Out Of The Habitable Zone
In the search for extraterrestrial life, water is highly regarded as a key ingredient for life to arise. Its polar structure allows it to form "hydrogen bonds," which are crucial for the formation of large organic carbon structures like DNA. Water is so important that scientists are constantly looking for planets in the "habitable zone" around their stars, a land flowing with milk and honey-er, I mean, liquid water. A habitable zone is determined by the properties of the star-with very bright, hot stars, it would be further out; and with dim, cool stars, liquid water could exist much closer in.

However, liquid water can exist in some out-of-the-way places. Several of Jupiter's moons experience such strong gravitational interactions with Jupiter and each other that they are heated up by tidal flexing, making them warm enough to sustain water in its liquid form, despite being five times further away from Sun than the Earth is!

One strong candidate for a watery moon is Europa. It has a frozen ice outer shell, and it's speculated that underneath might be that liquid gold - water. Scientists are still unsure just how much internal heating Europa receives, so it's still not fully known how thick the ice is. Tidal flexing keeps it dynamic and changing, and scientists have observed that the surface is lined with cracks, possibly formed from the ice chaotically pulling apart and smushing back together like giant icebergs in a mosh-pit. This is some of the evidence suggesting there might be a liquid Europan ocean underneath its icy crust.

We know that disequilibrium and dynamic change are characteristic of global cycles, which could potentially sustain an interacting biosphere. Planets and moons with lots going on are instinctively considered more "alive" than those that are unchanging rocks. So with the active energy source supplied by tidal forcing, and the possibility of a watery abundance, can we expect to find mermaids swimming beneath Europa's ice shell?

Once again, one has to think outside of the box when considering possibilities for Europan life. What might be lethal to some forms of life on Earth might be vital to something that might live on Europa. For example, Jupiter has a strong magnetosphere, which blasts harsh radiation towards its moons. Humans would never be able to survive there. But perhaps some forms of life could have adapted this radiation to their advantage. It's speculated that the radiation splits the water molecules on Europa's surface, allowing the hydrogen to float off into space, and the oxygen to sink into the ocean, mixing down to feed underwater life protected from the external radiation.

Life continues to surprise us, even on Earth. Scientists have discovered an abundance of organisms living at the bottom of our oceans near boiling hot hydrothermal vents, and it is possible that the internal tectonics on Europa cause hydrothermal vents to exist there, too. Maybe we can find analogous life thriving there as well.

But, maybe not. Our definition of life is really quite nebulous, and we only have one example of a planet to base it off of. Perhaps alien life will be so strange that we don't recognize it, or perhaps it is simply not there. But we'll never know if we don't look.

The next mission to Europa is called JUICE: JUpiter ICy moon Explorer. It's run by the European Space Agency, and is scheduled to conduct flybys of Europa in 2030. Some groups have also pushed to send a lander to sample surface geology and perhaps melt down through the ice to explore the ocean beneath, but nothing concrete is planned yet.

Though all we can do for the moment is speculate about what might exist there, if life can thrive inside a planet, then we have many more options of where to look. Europa is definitely expanding our ideas of where a habitable zone can exist.
