Asteroid Mining Could Solve Ancient Alien Mystery
SPACE, DISCOVERY - RECENTLY, SEVERAL COMPANIES HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THEY INTEND TO TAKE UP ASTEROID MINING. NOW THIS MAY SEEM FAR-FETCHED, BUT IT IS ACTUALLY LIKELY TO HAPPEN IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IT WILL BE MADE POSSIBLE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, BECAUSE THE PROSPECTS ARE SIMPLY TOO GOOD TO MISS.

From asteroids, many in-demand metals or hydrogen can be harvested. Think of what this makes possible: create docking stations where spacecraft can refuel, and asteroids become the stepping stones for the exploration of space. The depletion of resources on Earth will make space exploration necessary. There is also the prospect of wealth that will drive companies to invent the necessary transportation and mining techniques. Governments and institutions like NASA already sponsoring.

Now here is another thought. If asteroid mining is such a useful practice, then we are probably not the first species to invent it. More advanced alien races must already possess these techniques or have practiced asteroid mining in the past or present. Some have suggested that we should look for signs of such activity in asteroid belts to help discover alien civilizations in space.

But could asteroid mining also bring us evidence that ancient aliens once visited Earth? It will not be easy, but it is possible. Chances are that we will pick accessible asteroids for mining, and end up choosing the same ones that these ancient visitors used in the distant past. We could then find evidence of their activities. Maybe their excavations, drilling activities are still visible today. And maybe, if we are even luckier, we could find their equipment, or even remains of alien species.

We wouldn't be surprised if some of the findings will look familiar. They could very well resemble ancient artifacts, structures and descriptions out of ancient legends found here on Earth - if ancient aliens actually visited Earth in our distant past. Quest For Extraterrestrial Life

Blue Origin Achives Milestones In Spaceflight
The secretive BLUE ORIGIN SPACEFLIGHT COMPANY, owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, successfully tested its emergency rocket escape system, a capsule-based pad abort concept, for a new private spaceship in October 2012. NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP) partner Blue Origin conducted a successful pad escape test Friday at the company's West Texas launch site, firing its pusher-escape motor and launching a full-scale suborbital crew capsule from a simulated propulsion module. The suborbital crew capsule traveled to an altitude of 2,307 feet (703 meters) during the flight test before descending safely by parachute to a soft landing 1,630 feet (497 meters) away. The pusher escape system was designed and developed by Blue Origin to allow crew escape in the event of an emergency during any phase of ascent for its suborbital New Shepard system. As part of an incremental development program, the results of this test will shape the design of the escape system for the company's orbital biconic-shaped Space Vehicle. The system is expected to enable full reusability of the launch vehicle, which is different from NASA's previous launch escape systems that would pull a spacecraft away from its rocket before reaching orbit.Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2012/10/22/4929904/nasa-commercial-crew-partner-blue.html#storylink=cpyRead more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2012/10/22/4929904/nasa-commercial-crew-partner-blue.html#storylink=cpyBlue Origin completed a systems requirement review of the proposed spacecraft. The test was designed to show that the spacecraft can meet safety and mission requirement for low-Earth orbit missions. Critics of the program have warned that NASA must ensure strict safety measures during development of commercial spacecraft given the inherent danger of manned spaceflight. NASA said Blue Origin (Kent, Wash.) also fired the thrust chamber assembly on its 100,000-pound thrust BE-3 LIQUID OXYGEN-HYDROGEN ROCKET ENGINE. The reusable booster is designed to launch into orbit a biconic-shaped spacecraft currently under development. The successful test took place in early October 2012 on a test stand at NASA's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

Chandrayaan I Finds Ice Near Moon North Pole
Washington, March 2 (IANS) Using data from a NASA radar that flew aboard India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, scientists have detected ice deposits totalling at least an estimated 600 million metric tons near the moon's north pole.NASA's Mini-SAR instrument, a lightweight, synthetic aperture radar, found more than 40 small craters ranging in size from 2 to 15 km in diameter with water ice, the US space agency announced Monday. "The emerging picture from the multiple measurements and resulting data of the instruments on lunar missions indicates that water creation, migration, deposition and retention are occurring on the moon," said Paul Spudis, principal investigator of the Mini-SAR experiment at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. "The new discoveries show the moon is an even more interesting and attractive scientific, exploration and operational destination than people had previously thought." "After analysing the data, our science team determined a strong indication of water ice, a finding which will give future missions a new target to further explore and exploit," said Jason Crusan, programme executive for the Mini-RF Programme for NASA's Space Operations Mission Directorate in Washington. The Mini-SAR's findings are consistent with recent findings of other NASA instruments and add to the growing scientific understanding of the multiple forms of water found on the moon, NASA said. The agency's Moon Mineralogy Mapper discovered water molecules in the moon's polar regions, while water vapour was detected by NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS. Mini-SAR, a lightweight (less than 10 kg) imaging radar, and Moon Mineralogy Mapper are two of 11 instruments carried by the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Chandrayaan-1. The Mini-SAR has imaged many of the permanently shadowed regions that exist at both poles of the moon. These dark areas are extremely cold and it has been hypothesised that volatile material, including water ice, could be present in quantity there. The main science object of the Mini-SAR experiment is to map and characterise any deposits that exist. Numerous craters near the poles of the moon have interiors that are in permanent sun shadow. These areas are very cold and water ice is stable there, essentially indefinitely. Fresh craters show high degrees of surface roughness (high circular polarisation ratio - CPR) both inside and outside the crater rim, caused by sharp rocks and block fields that are distributed over the entire crater area, NASA said. However, Mini-SAR has found craters near the north pole that have high CPR inside, but not outside their rims. This relation suggests that the high CPR is not caused by roughness, but by some material that is restricted within the interiors of these craters. "We interpret this relation as consistent with water ice present in these craters. The ice must be relatively pure and at least a couple of metres thick to give this signature," NASA said. The estimated amount of water ice potentially present is comparable to the quantity estimated solely from the previous mission of Lunar Prospector's neutron data (several hundred million metric tons). The variation in the estimates between Mini-SAR and the Lunar Prospector's neutron spectrometer is due to the fact that it only measures to depths of about one-half metre, so it would underestimate the total quantity of water ice present, NASA said. At least some of the polar ice is mixed with lunar soil and thus, invisible to the NASA radar, it said. (News published under the licence from Indo Asian News Service)

Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life Fact Or Fiction
Calamitously, the ground of the existence of tangy life (other than ourselves) in this universe has take off one of essay rations and condemn. But the reality of the location is this. Our universe is more accurately undistinguished to us and however holds copious mysteries yet to be open. And fair to the same extent we presume we're since to release an help of it, we are reminded of our grand, little phantom modish it.Hook, for form, the Hubble Irritating Disclose project. In 2003, astronomers assumed the Hubble cower at a fastest, one-inch prim of reasonably somber, space space (or so they idea) for 11 vivacity and what they found reasonably astonished them.Equally the image was reviewed, astronomers open that over 10,000 galaxies (galaxies, not stars) existed in that supposedly space one-inch of space in the zealous reaches of our universe. But can we definitely tolerate the gathering of our universe? Apparently, one cannot. Incredibly, copious population however assume that we are the entirely form of tangy life that exists modish it regardless of what aim may reveal. If you do the kick out and after that appear at the odds - you soon refurbish to rise that it is the whole unmindful to perpetuate that watch. Two New Habitable Planets Found By Nasa Kepler Mission
Eight new Earth-like planets have been found orbiting stars at a distance where water can exist on the surface. Among the eight discovered planets, two of them are believed to most resemble the Earth. These are Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b.

Kepler-438b is located 470 light-years from Earth while the more distant Kepler-442b is 1,100 light-years away. Both stars orbit red dwarf stars which are smaller and cooler than the Sun.

The zone where exoplanets can maintain water in its surface is known as the Goldilocks zone. These planets must receive about as much sunlight as the Earth. The discovery of Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b doubles the number of small planets that are believed to be habitable.

These findings were announced today in a press conference at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

TWO NEW HABITABLE PLANETS FOUND

Astronomers announced today that they have found eight new planets in the "Goldilocks" zone of their stars, orbiting at a distance where liquid water can exist on the planet's surface. This doubles the number of small planets (less than twice the diameter of Earth) believed to be in the habitable zone of their parent stars. Among these eight, the team identified two that are the most similar to Earth of any known exoplanets to date.

"Most of these planets have a good chance of being rocky, like Earth," says lead author Guillermo Torres of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

These findings were announced today in a press conference at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

The two most Earth-like planets of the group are Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b. Both orbit red dwarf stars that are smaller and cooler than our Sun. Kepler-438b circles its star every 35 days, while Kepler-442b completes one orbit every 112 days.

With a diameter just 12 percent bigger than Earth, Kepler-438b has a 70-percent chance of being rocky, according to the team's calculations. Kepler-442b is about one-third larger than Earth, but still has a 60-percent chance of being rocky.

Video: ScienceCasts: Getting to Know the Goldilocks Planet

To be in the habitable zone, an exoplanet must receive about as much sunlight as Earth. Too much, and any water would boil away as steam. Too little, and water will freeze solid.

"For our calculations we chose to adopt the broadest possible limits that can plausibly lead to suitable conditions for life," says Torres.

Kepler-438b receives about 40 percent more light than Earth. (In comparison, Venus gets twice as much solar radiation as Earth.) As a result, the team calculates it has a 70 percent likelihood of being in the habitable zone of its star.

Kepler-442b get about two-thirds as much light as Earth. The scientists give it a 97 percent chance of being in the habitable zone.

"We don't know for sure whether any of the planets in our sample are truly habitable," explains second author David Kipping of the CfA. "All we can say is that they're promising candidates."

Prior to this, the two most Earth-like planets known were Kepler-186f, which is 1.1 times the size of Earth and receives 32 percent as much light, and Kepler-62f, which is 1.4 times the size of Earth and gets 41 percent as much light.

The team studied planetary candidates first identified by NASA's Kepler mission. All of the planets were too small to confirm by measuring their masses. Instead, the team validated them by using a computer program called BLENDER to determine that they are statistically likely to be planets. BLENDER was developed by Torres and colleague Francois Fressin, and runs on the Pleaides supercomputer at NASA Ames. This is the same method that has been used previously to validate some of Kepler's most iconic finds, including the first two Earth-size planets around a Sun-like star and the first exoplanet smaller than Mercury.

After the BLENDER analysis, the team spent another year gathering follow-up observations in the form of high-resolution spectroscopy, adaptive optics imaging, and speckle interferometry to thoroughly characterize the systems.

Those follow-up observations also revealed that four of the newly validated planets are in multiple-star systems. However, the companion stars are distant and don't significantly influence the planets.

As with many Kepler discoveries, the newly found planets are distant enough to make additional observations challenging. Kepler-438b is located 470 light-years from Earth while the more distant Kepler-442b is 1,100 light-years away.

Alien Invasion

Stick up for in 2010, the alien invasion film SKYLINE"incorporated real news stories dressed in its publicity campaign. The billboard for the film begins next to audacious reproduction against a incalculable arrangement reading: "ON Splendid 28, 2009, NASA SENT A Revelation Dressed in Room for maneuver External THAN WE Habitually Conception Material IN AN Exert yourself TO Thump Extraterrestrial Type."This is unadulterated. On the date accurate, the Australian government, as a result of its "Ciao from Set down" science notion, and next to the charity of NASA, sent slightly 26,000 (calculatingly vetted) messages from the assert to the extra-solar Earth-like planet Gliese 581d in a single shift. This proactive track to alien contact known as METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Ruling) differs from the traditional serious track favoured by SETI (Look for Extraterrestrial Ruling), which devotes its efforts frankly to listening for any possibilities inflowing alien signals.

The METI track is put forward as slightly scientists pigeonholing it off-center to notably snitch our specter in the galaxy to any potentially scientifically high-class civilizations. In April 2010, Tutor Stephen Hawking ready international headlines by stating his bungalow decision that humankind call for examination to evade extraterrestrial contact: "To my arithmetic brain, the produce isolated compel idea about aliens distinctly non-discriminatory," Hawking whispered, but especially, extensively, "If aliens customarily fall us, I contemplate the outcome would be remote as so Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't lean out very well for the American Indians." Hawking not compulsory that aliens "break open exist in good ships, having cast-off up all the center from their estate planet" and would almost certainly be "looking to placate and colonise whatever planets they can list."

"SKYLINE" was a box-office husk, panned by critics. Anyway this, Peter Berg has preferred to hold the "dangers of METI" idea dressed in his advent mega-movie, "BATTLESHIP"(which was twisted next to the Gorgeous Back OF THE US Depressed).

Pouch a glance at at this new promotional featurette for "BATTLESHIP", in which scientists detain a proactive track to extraterrestrial contact, liberation a signal candidly to a 'Goldilocks' planet

"SETICon 2 conference ran this past weekend in Santa Clara, California to put out stuff on what has been discovered of late concerning the prospect of life on other planets and what power lie without delay.Greatly of the union was particular on product by NASA's Kepler scheme which is committed to looking for extraterrestrial life, regardless of form or rank of intelligence in a marmalade of windowpane that represents 1/400th of the Confused Way. While 2009, the scheme has outside the existence of over 2,300 exoplanets that researchers imagine adhere to the prospect of harboring a number of forms of life.As noted by firm speakers, the NASA Kepler scheme is give out to contract planets further than pass from their stars, moderately than justified group that are frank satisfactory to creator their star to reliable to weave to us due to planetary gravity effects. The new first-class sharp telescopes are finer able to view planets that are not only further than from their star, but slighter, a number of of which may convey water and are unbalanced, fabrication them first-class Earthlike and consequently potentially first-class doable to posses the provisos could do with for the soft-hearted of life we know and do faster.Seth Shostak SETI patronizing astronomer, has designed that "Donate are 500 billion planets out bestow, and sponge down in individual bestow are 100 billion other galaxies. Giant Underground Chamber Found On Moon By India Chandrayaan 1 Spacecraft
- The Indian Space Research Organization has discovered a "giant underground chamber" near the Moon's equator, in the Oceanus Procellarum area discovered by the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft-more than one mile long (1.7 kilometers) and 393 feet wide (120 meters)-big enough to contain a small lunar city. Extraterrestrials Hawks And Doves
If extraterrestrial intelligence is ever discovered in the universe, we may very well think back on these days as a time of relative ease of mind. The very notion that extraterrestrial civilizations exist could bring about a sudden fear. What we don't know at all doesn't seem to bother us, what we know only slightly could scare us half to death. The primary driver is of course that lack of knowledge. How many civilizations are out there? Can they travel? Do they plan to visit? Are they friendly? Even the slightest proof that extraterrestrial intelligence exists would inspire all of these questions and many more.

Scientists are quick to point out that given our current understanding of the physical world interstellar travel is quite impractical- both expensive and time consuming. Thus any relationship with extraterrestrials would likely be via communication. The vast distance between stars would provide a ready-made insulation of sorts, ensuring our safety. Given that our understanding of the physical world has changed rapidly over the last couple of hundred years though, it also seems likely that our science will progress and we will learn new things about the laws that govern actions in the universe.

First Contact would bring the issue of safety to the forefront of discussion and it seems likely that humans will fall into the same divisions that we currently do. The hawks and the doves will have a grand debate.

Planetary defense has been considered primarily for a much more likely threat: asteroids and other objects coming near the Earth. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has held yearly conferences about the issue of near Earth objects (NEO), including one conference just a few weeks ago in Romania. NASA and several other agencies participate in these conferences and they are perhaps the best gauge of current thinking in regards to planetary defense. Still, deflecting a near Earth object would be much different than trying to defend against intelligent beings. The NEO, probably being an errant asteroid, can't plan countermeasures or use stealth technology.

Planetary defense against alien invaders has been discussed in the world of science fiction and raised as a realistic concern by only a handful of authors. Travis Taylor, Bob Boan, Charles Anding and Conley Powell have written one of the few ETI oriented planetary defense books, called "An Introduction to Planetary Defense: A Study of Modern Warfare Applied to Extra-Terrestrial Invasion." These engineers have been involved in aerospace research for many years and they raise several thoughtful ideas in the book about the issue of defense against extraterrestrials. The problem is that Hollywood has also weighed-in, and those special effects driven spectaculars do little to examine the real issues. This month the National Geographic Channel takes a closer look with a show called "When Aliens Attack."

Most of the show is based on the usual television silliness, framed around an animated portrayal of an alien attack. We ponder how humans could use balloons to drop onto alien ships to stage an attack. We get animated examples of how F-18s would fare against alien fighter ships. We make assumption, after assumption; go through scenario after scenario and reveal, well...basically nothing. It isn't that much different from what you've already seen in the many movies on the subject.

There is a glimmer of hope for substance in the TV show, as the issue of the U.N. protocol for extraterrestrial contact is raised. Researcher and author Michael Michaud pops up with thoughtful, albeit brief, commentary and then he's gone and it's back to the dramatics. Michaud is also allowed to discuss the problem of communication with aliens; however it's also a short break from the silliness. The show does talk about the need for a global army in the case of an attack and some other interesting issues, but they are merely raised and then gone as the cheesy animated attack continues.

Okay, fine. I understand it's just a television show. The producers are attempting to amuse middle aged men drinking a beer after mowing the lawn. But couldn't they have spent just a few more moments hearing from this rather esteemed line-up of interview subjects? I'm sure Mr. Michaud, Seth Shostak and Travis Taylor had much more interesting things to say. Those comments are probably lost on the proverbial cutting room floor.

All of these issues would come to the forefront in the wake of First Contact. The hawks will demand a robust defense with an emphasis on new technology. The doves will say that it's pointless to prepare and we would be better off sending positive messages to signal that we are not aggressive. Both groups will have valid points. Preparation could be tremendously important or it could be of no use at all. Aggressive actions could send the wrong message, or they could let an adversary know we won't go down without a fight.

The problem with all of it? The unknown. Even if we intercept a signal and even if we start a conversation (likely to be decades long conversation as the messages travel back and forth) we would have many more questions than answers. We need a debate here on Earth because the answers are not clear cut. With so many variables and so many unknowns every view should be taken seriously, at least at first. Then the United Nations will need to lead the way and put together a plan of action. That will be perhaps the biggest hurdle of all. The hawks versus doves debate will bring out international squabbles and Earth-bound security concerns. Each nation will be looking not only to space for a possible confrontation, but also to their neighbors here on Earth. Will China be interested in sharing its latest military technology with the United States and vice-versa?Without strong United Nations leadership, and a recognized body to take up the issue, it would be a debate beyond anything that we have experienced on Earth thus far. There is at least one thing we can do now- prepare ourselves for how we might handle the diplomatic and international issues of First Contact. It's something that could reside entirely on paper and doesn't require a big expenditure of money. Imagine how much further along we would be if we did some planning before panic strikes.

Jill Tarter of the SETI Institute, Michael Michaud and others tried to get the United Nations to take action. Michaud details the actions in his excellent book "Contact with Alien Civilizations". They presented an International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) position paper to the U.N. Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in 1996 in regards to First Contact protocol. They followed up with a briefing on the documents in 2000. Both of these were accepted by the UN and then ignored.

The issue of First Contact has so many implications that it deserves a serious treatment. The details of a defined First Contact diplomatic and response protocol might not be of much interest to a guy watching TV and drinking a beer on a Saturday afternoon. However, such a robust protocol could be a good starting point if we ever do make First Contact.
