Two new papers from members of the MESSENGER Science Team provide global-scale maps of Mercury's surface chemistry that reveal previously unrecognized geochemical terranes - large regions that have compositions distinct from their surroundings. The presence of these large terranes has important implications for the history of the planet.
The MESSENGER mission was designed to answer several key scientific questions, including the nature of Mercury's geological history. Remote sensing of the surface's chemical composition has a strong bearing on this and other questions. Since MESSENGER was inserted into orbit about Mercury in March 2011, data from the spacecraft's X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) have provided information on the concentrations of potassium, thorium, uranium, sodium, chlorine, and silicon, as well as ratios relative to silicon of magnesium, aluminum, sulfur, calcium, and iron.
Until now, however, geochemical maps for some of these elements and ratios have been limited to one hemisphere and have had poor spatial resolution. In "Evidence for geochemical terranes on Mercury: Global mapping of major elements with MESSENGER's X-Ray Spectrometer," published this week in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, the authors used a novel methodology to produce global maps of the magnesium/silicon and aluminum/silicon abundance ratios across Mercury's surface from data acquired by MESSENGER's XRS.
These are the first global geochemical maps of Mercury, and the first maps of global extent for any planetary body acquired via the technique of X-ray fluorescence, by which X-rays emitted from the Sun's atmosphere allow the planet's surface composition to be examined. The global magnesium and aluminum maps were paired with less spatially complete maps of sulfur/silicon, calcium/silicon, and iron/silicon, as well as other MESSENGER datasets, to study the geochemical characteristics of Mercury's surface and to investigate the evolution of the planet's thin silicate shell.

The most obvious of Mercury's geochemical terranes is a large feature, spanning more than 5 million square kilometers. This terrane "exhibits the highest observed magnesium/silicon, sulfur/silicon, and calcium/silicon ratios, as well as some of the lowest aluminum/silicon ratios on the planet's surface," writes Shoshana Weider, a planetary geologist and Visiting Scientist at the Carnegie Institution. Weider and colleagues suggest that this "high-magnesium region" could be the site of an ancient impact basin. By this interpretation, the distinctive chemical signature of the region reflects a substantial contribution from mantle material that was exposed during a large impact event.
A second paper, "Geochemical terranes of Mercury's northern hemisphere as revealed by MESSENGER neutron measurements," now available online in Icarus, presents the first maps of the absorption of low-energy ("thermal") neutrons across Mercury's surface. The data used in this second study were obtained with the GRS anti-coincidence shield, which is sensitive to neutron emissions from the surface of Mercury.
"From these maps we may infer the distribution of thermal-neutron-absorbing elements across the planet, including iron, chlorine, and sodium," writes lead author Patrick Peplowski of The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. "This information has been combined with other MESSENGER geochemical measurements, including the new XRS measurements, to identify and map four distinct geochemical terranes on Mercury."
According to Peplowski, the results indicate that the smooth plains interior to the Caloris basin, Mercury's largest well-preserved impact basin, have an elemental composition that is distinct from other volcanic plains units, suggesting that the parental magmas were partial melts from a chemically distinct portion of Mercury's mantle. Mercury's high-magnesium region, first recognized from the XRS measurements, also contains high concentrations of unidentified neutron-absorbing elements.

"Earlier MESSENGER data have shown that Mercury's surface was pervasively shaped by volcanic activity," notes Peplowski. "The magmas erupted long ago were derived from the partial melting of Mercury's mantle. The differences in composition that we are observing among geochemical terranes indicate that Mercury has a chemically heterogeneous mantle."
"The consistency of the new XRS and GRS maps provides a new dimension to our view of Mercury's surface," Weider adds. "The terranes we observe had not previously been identified on the basis of spectral reflectance or geological mapping."
"The crust we see on Mercury was largely formed more than three billion years ago," says Carnegie's Larry Nittler, Deputy Principal Investigator of the mission and co-author of both studies. "The remarkable chemical variability revealed by MESSENGER observations will provide critical constraints on future efforts to model and understand Mercury's bulk composition and the ancient geological processes that shaped the planet's mantle and crust."

TX, JANUARY 23, 2011 - BLACK FLYING OBJECT APPROX 500' ABOVE HOUSES TRAVELLING NORTH. MUFON CASE # 27503.At approximately 2305 hours on 01/23/2011,in La Porte, Texas. I was walking my dog when I heard a strange humming sound. When I looked up I saw a black flying object, shaped like a teardrop but with angular wing like protrusions pointing backwards. Three(3)very bright orange lights were facing forward. Two(2)of the lights were on each side of the craft facing forward and one(1)orange light was in the middle or nose area of the craft.The craft made a sound that was like high current electricity, a loud humming sound. The craft's sound was like no sound that I have ever heard before from a man made flying machine. When I saw the craft, I was transfixed by the very bright orange lights. At no time was I scared or did I feel threatened in any way. The craft was traveling North at approximately 500' above the tops of the houses. The forward velocity seemed to be approximately 60 mph. The craft was traveling in a straight orientation. I saw this flying craft for approximately three (3) minutes. I lost sight of the object after it passed overhead and continued north. Went out to jog at 11 pm and was heading north; turned to the west and was surprised to see two extremely bright orange fuzzy balls. Couldn't tell if they were moving at first, or if the moon was reflecting off aircraft. Stopped jogging to observe. Watched as the two lights remained in perfect formation blocking light from stars. The stars between the two lights remained visible. The speed of the lights was hard to determine; although they did not seem to be in a hurry. Started jogging again towards the west watching the two lights. My peripheral picked up another light to my left from southeast. My hair stood up all over. Three lights now, with the trailing light catching up to the first two. Looked back to the west and only saw one light; looked south and saw the third; looked back west and nothing; and when I turned south again the third light was gone.

We like to make it so simple. We imagine First Contact as occurring with just one alien civilization. But what about two alien civilizations? Better yet- what about two conflicting alien civilizations? I know- farfetched, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. If there is another civilization out there, then why not two, three or four? As we know from human experience- often intelligent beings don't get along so well. Could humans get caught in an extraterrestrial squabble of some sort? It would certainly make things more difficult. Not only would we have to cope with First Contact human response issues, but also find a way to sort out alien conflicts and decide how to proceed. It would step up the urgency of the situation significantly, especially if the aliens were hostile with each other. Now granted, having two competing alien civilizations announce themselves at one time seems pretty unlikely. But if they are concerned about currying favor and developing a relationship with humanity, conceivably the actions of one alien civilization attempting to make contact with humans could lead to a preemptive hello from a competing group. Why would we be so popular? Who knows? Considering how unpopular we are right now (with no contact at all) that would depend on alien motivations. Those motivations could be quite complex, and perhaps beyond our understanding.Still, it does raise an important point. Como o pr'oprio termo insinua, portanto, os membros deste segmento da Ufologia utilizam ferramentas pouco convencionais para manter contatos com seres do espaco.
Fazem uso de pr'aticas que se mantiveram confinadas por longo velocity `as escolas inici'aticas [Instituic~oes dedicadas ao estudo dos fundamentos da realidade e `as pr'aticas metaf'isicas], como por exemplo a respeitada Ordem Rosacruz, na qual s~ao desenvolvidas certas habilidades denominadas m'isticas. Suas pr'aticas s~ao assim determinadas por n~ao adotarem uma teoria que as esclareca.
Esse segmento da Ufologia utiliza ainda telepatia, canalizac~ao, mediunidade, psicografia, viagem lunar, telestesia [Fus~ao de duas ou mais consci^encias pertencentes a n'iveis evolutivos diferentes, visando a transmiss~ao de informac~oes], e outros recursos do g^enero. Tais ferramentas promovem um interc^ambio informativo, que pode ser visto com um certo ceticismo pelos uf'ologos mais tradicionais, devido aos meios empregados.
Apesar disso, ser~ao expostos alguns aspectos importantes dessa forma pol^emica de pesquisa ufol'ogica, tamb'em conhecida pelo termo contatismo. As informac~oes divulgadas pela Ufologia M'istica, sejam elas quais forem, merecem o respeito da Ufologia tradicional, que, como todos sabem, give up de referencial para tais ocorr^encias extraf'isicas. As diferencas de abordagens desses segmentos devem ser encaradas de forma positiva, pois garantem a todos o acesso `a faces diferentes da mesma verdade, como nos sugere uma 'unica part'icula qu^antica que se comporta ora como um corp'usculo, ora como onda, dependendo de quem a observa.
