Actually much of the time, Menzel "was" wrong, for like a lot of other people who think they have THE answer to UFO reports Menzel took his ideas far too far. Thus the Skyhook balloon that Thomas Mantell chased to his death was a mock sun in Menzel's eyes, and he devised complex explanations involving mirages, although there were probably much simpler explanations. But on re-reading I noted that he didn't quite push the irage hypothesis as far as ufological folklore suggests that he did, and it is interesting to see that he was one of the first people to try and place modern UFO reports in a historical context - there are some fascinating historical snippets included in this book. There is, of course, the same literalism that also infects ETH believers. Thus Menzel argues the vision of Ezekiel was a sun dog, just as others have argued that it was tornado, plasma vortex, extra-terrestrial helicopter or a prevision of railway locomotives. That it is essentially a work of allegorical fiction is not considered by any of these authors. I rather suspect that, every bit as much as debunking the ETH, Menzel was actually motivated by using popular interest in flying saucers as a hook on which to hang a study of peculiar atmospheric phenomena aimed at a general audience. Within a decade Menzel had abandoned the mirages for a much more general sceptical approach, but they were resurrected decades later and in a much more extreme fashion by Steuart Campbell. The section on life on Venus and Mars now looks very quaint indeed, with Venus being granted warm oceans and how the dark areas seen on Mars "have proved to be vegetation". UFO SIGHTING IN OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA ON JUNE 21ST 2013 - LIGHT SHOW OVER THE OCEAN SURPRISES BEACH VISITORS

I was walking along the beach around 10:00pm the evening of June 21,2013. There was a full moon that night which was a majestic sight over the ocean. I heard a group of people yelling and pointing at the sky. I looked up over the ocean and saw 3 glowing lights in a line. The light farthest to the right went out and was replaced by another to the front left of the line. This happened about 3 times. There was no sound. I was trying to find the video button on my phone and captured the last few seconds of the light show and then they disappeared. My husband and I have seen strange lights on this beach before and told others on the island. Some look at you crazy and some told us they were flares. These were NOT flares. The ocean was very visible and there were NO boats under or near these lights.The group of people who witnessed this with me were very excited and screaming "OMG, WOW, UFO!"

HBCC UFO Research Note: This is a very interesting report, and since reports have been coming from the entire area I was wondering if other people who may have been witness to the objects, and sound would you please file a report on the event to HBCC UFO Research.

Message: Ok I don't know what happened last night but It was the most frightening, incredible, and down right terrifying thing I have ever seen! Ok, so I was walking my dog along the Beach in Westbank, BC and Minding my own business at close to 11:00 PM on the 2nd of July (yesterday) and I seen this really really, really big bright thingy that looked something like a, well, I don't know, but it didn't fit the usual description of a UFO round thing, it looked somewhat like a Torpedo or something with wings, kind of like a fighter jet, screaming across the sky and downwards on fire. It crashed into the lake and it was a big splash, almost like a large, large plane!

The sound was incredibly loud and like a deep bass "womp womp womp" sound as it came down. I ducked for cover thinking of a meteor or asteroid or something. I started to freak out and yell and as I was standing up, something came literally shooting back out of the water and I saw it start to hurtle towards a different looking object very high in the sky, which kind of looked like a cone of some sort. I saw what looked like what you would see in a star wars movie for the bullets of the blaster kind of things coming from the object that just was in the lake and I heard a loud bang that knocked me off my feet and I looked up to see what the heck was going on and the cone shaped object was gone and the torpedo thing was just hovering. Moving from side to side almost confused and then a loud sonic boom and it was gone. People came running out to me as I screamed loudly and people asked me what happened. What was I going to say, I just saw two UFOs? Not likely. What the heck could have this been?

Nobody else was on the street. My girlfriend felt unnerved by its silence. I felt excited by the sighting, and wanted to follow it, but as it got closer, I felt a little unnerved as well. We turned east to continue on our errand, and then we turned south. As we turned south, we spotted the object again, flying over the treeline. The object was moving in the same direction that we were traveling. We lost sight of it under the treeline. UFOS SPOTTED FROM CHINA SAID TO BE GUYANESE ROCKETS

Astronomy enthusiasts in Chinas southwestern Sichuan and Yunnan provinces have observed luminous fan-shaped objects emitting cylindrical rays of light. The Beijing UFO Research Society says the objects are not UFOs but two satellites launched from South America.

Amateur astronomer Li Feng says he saw a strange shining object with his own eyes while taking photographs of astronomical phenomena on Nov. 11 in Zoige county in Sichuan. The mysterious object appeared beside constellations Canis Major and Puppis. Upon closer observation with the aid of a telescope, Li and his companion saw the object moving slowly casting rings of light toward the ground, according to web portal Sina.

Meanwhile, in the village of Aziying in Yunan province, another stargazer spotted an object beside Canis Major which resembled a comet.

The aspect of the photographs and the objects spatial relation to the constellations suggest the light sources were high above the ground, said Wang Sichao, a researcher at the Purple Mountain Observatory attached to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The object seen by Li is unlikely to be a comet since it was easily observable with the naked eye, was very bright and moved somewhat faster. The wave-like rays emitting from its tail were also not characteristic of comets. Wang, consulting astronomical data, confirmed that no comet has come sufficiently close to the Earth which would explain the phenomenon.

The researcher suggested the object was some kind of moving vehicle emitting a substance creating the illusion of waves of light....
