After many problems with the US post office the copy of Nick Redfern's book "Contactees: A History of Alien-Human Interaction," that he so very kindly sent me, finally arrived; and I've just finished reading it. I have no expertise in doing a book review so these are just my thoughts; the things that occurred to me as I was reading. I began by sending Nick my thoughts and he suggested that I do a Blog Post, so here it is. Those familiar with the articles on my website will know that I like to take a rather unconventional angle on things.Having read the first few chapter I was starting to think that he should have called the book "Californian Contactees," given how many took place in that State. And I noted how often the Contactees seemed to describe their contacts as being similar to the things that were current in their own lives. For example, Adamski had meetings with hippy-type beings, whereas Truman Bethurum woke to find himself surrounded by beings wearing uniforms and black-billed caps. As he was working as a maintenance mechanic on a road construtcion site I wondered if his fellow workers also wore uniforms of some type.Reading about Orfeo Angelucci seeming to have a panic attack just before he found himself undergoing a contact reminded me of my own panic attacks. One such put me into the Oz Factor state of mind. I was walking home along a road in the middle of town, during the late afternoon, when I became aware that I couldn't actually hear the traffic passing me by, and things seemed to be totally unreal. But I didn't have any contact experience!However, back to the book. As I read on I found myself thinking about the Name Game, so here are the things that stood out for me in that regard:- Mr. Janus and Prince Philip's equerry - it suddenly occurred to me that Janus was also the name of a god in Roman mythology. Even today, for some people, there's still a belief that beings live on Venus, but as spiritual entities who live in the planet's atmosphere.Relating the experiences of Dana Howard, a quote from Regan Lee says that Diane is a version of the name Diana. Of course, Diana, is also the goddess of the hunt, associated with wild animals and woodlands, as well as being associated with the Moon. Regan adds that Venus represents: " the female sex, fertility, beauty, love." And in many of those Contactee stories Venus also seems to represent the sexual side of that idea with all those men meeting beautiful Venusian women!The tale of what Villas Boas said happened to him is well known, but what struck me was the part where he described being covered with a "gel-like substance" when he was first taken aboard the craft. I was immediately reminded of the gel we use these days to disinfect our hands, particularly in places such as hospitals, when access to soap and water isn't available.Another very famous UFO story is that of Lonnie Zamora, and his description of the marking he saw on the craft. He said that it was a red marking shaped like a crescent with a vertical arrow and a horizontal line beneath. I found part of that depiction to be reminiscent of the sign of an arrow pointing upwards which is, apparently, the sign from the ground-to-air emergency code meaning: "I/we proceed in this direction." However, there are also reports that the insignia was actually more akin to what could be described as two letters A, one inside the other, with several horizontal bars disecting them.While talking of symbols, I was interested in the case of patrolman Herbert Schirmer. He stated that, on the Ufonaut's uniform, he saw the insignia of a Winged Serpent. Unfortunately it isn't clear if this was a representation of some animal, or that of the Caduceus. But, if was akin the to the Caduceus, which is what came to my mind as I read about it, then I found that fascinating. In ancient Greece the god Mercury was represented by Hermes. He was the fleet footed messenger of the gods, and his symbol was the caduceus, the staff of the two snakes. And in ancient Rome, Hermes was not only the god of merchants but also of thieves; and the symbol became that of traders. More importantly, it also became the symbol of communication. For those of us with an interest in astrology we know that when Mercury is retrograde clear communcation can suffer. And, to return for a moment to the insignia that Lonnie Zamora described, if he actually saw the double A with the horizontal bars across it, then in alchemy, where mercury was thought to have been used, it represented an amalgam.A furhter connection that came to mind was when reading about Vorilhon, who became Ra"el, and started the Ra"elian. He seems to have based his ideas on his early Catholic childhood. Not only did he use the name Yahweh, meaning God, but the english title of his book: "The Book Which Tells the Truth" could in many ways be interchangeable with what many belive to the be Truth as The Bible tells it. He even used the term Elohim for the alient scientists he purportedly met. In the Hebrew Bible the word Elohim is translated as God, but in the English Bible the translation usually refers to gods, i.e. pagan deities, and God when meaning the God of Israel. I was also struck by the fact that both Ra"el and Applewhite, from the Heaven's Gate Cult had, at one time, careers based around music, and both had religious backgrounds.To return to Billy Meier, he said that one of the Contacts was Quetzal. That, of course, is the first part of the name Quetzalcoatl, a Mesoamerican deity. Quetzalcoatl was a god, often depicted as a white man, who's name meant light, the shining one. He was believed to have brought civilization to Mesoamerica. In the iconography he is depicted as a feathered, or possibly winged, serpent.And here's one final name-game: Nick writes that Maury coined the term Hypnagogia in the 1800s, although the state already had a very long hisotry. That reminded me of the Maury Island Incident, in June 1947 three days before Kenneth Arnold had his famous sighting. I've even had the conditon myself sometimes. On one occasion I heard an animal growl and "knew" a large cat was outside my bedroom door!If anything that I've written makes you want to read this book then you can buy a copy of it at Amazon in either the US or the UK. Personally, having been a follower of Ufology for many decades now, there were few Contactee cases that I didn't know about, but it was good to be able to refresh my memory as I'd forgotten so much about them. It's also great that younger generations can also read about them. I think we tend to forget where so much of Ufology began in modern era. And, finally, as I was reading I also noted how many of the current New Age ideas seem to have their roots in what these early Contactees said. For the early Contactees it was about peace and the dangers of nuclear war, now it's about ecology and climate change. Always the things that seem to worry us most.

WEEKEND FEATURE: SEARCH FOR ADVANCED EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE -"PROBE MARS FOR ARTIFACTS" SAY LEADING ASTROPHYSICISTS

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has a low probability of success, but it would have a high impact if successful. Physicists Paul Davies and Robert Wagner of Arizona State University argued last year that it makes sense to widen the search to scour the Moon for possible alien artifacts. At Penn State, researchers propose the same type of searchsearch for Mars. To date, SETI has been dominated by the paradigm of seeking deliberately beamed radio messages.

The ASU team argued that Alien civilizations may have sent probes to our region of the galaxy, and that any mission to the solar system would probably have occurred a very long time ago. The lunar environment could preserve artifacts for millions of years due to the absence of erosion and plate tectonics.

Indirect evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence could come from any incontrovertible signatures of non-human Alien technology. Existing searchable databases from astronomy, biology, earth and planetary sciences all offer low-cost opportunities to seek a footprint of extraterrestrial technology.

Davies and Wagner reason that the rapidly-expanding database of the photographic mapping of the Moon's surface by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to 0.5 m resolution offers an ideal opportunity to search for ancient artifacts and has mapped a quarter of the moon's surface since mid-2009.

Among the LRO images, scientists have spotted the Apollo landing sites as well as all of the Nasa and Soviet unmanned probes, some of which were revealed only by their odd-looking shadows.

Nasa has made more than 340,000 LRO images public, but that figure is expected to reach one million by the time the orbiting probe has mapped the whole lunar surface. "From these numbers, it is obvious that a manual search by a small team is hopeless," the scientists write.

The seismometer on Nasa's Apollo 12 mission detected only one impact per month from roughly grapefruit-sized meteorites within a 350km radius. According to Davies and Wagner, it could take hundreds of millions of years for an object tens of metres across to be buried by lunar soil and dust kicked up by these impacts. Software can search for strange-looking features, such as the sharp lines of solar panels, or the dust-covered contours of quarries or domed buildings. These might be visible millions of years after they were built.

Systematic scrutiny of the LRO photographic images is being routinely conducted for planetary science purposes, and this program could be expanded and outsourced at little extra cost to accommodate SETI goals, after the fashion of the SETI@home and Galaxy Zoo crowd-sourcing projects. Hundreds of thousands of pictures of the moon will be examined for telltale signs that aliens once visited our cosmic neighbourhood if plans go ahead. Online volunteers could be set task of spotting alien technology, evidence of mining and rubbish heaps in moon images.

Elswhere, two researchers at Penn State, are asking "why have we never found evidence of other civilizations in Solar System?" The team is approached the problem mathematically, which shows that we have not looked in enough places to ensure that no extraterrestrial artifacts exist in our solar system.

"The vastness of space, combined with our limited searches to date, implies that any remote unpiloted exploratory probes of extraterrestrial origin would likely remain unnoticed," report Jacob Haqq-Misra, Rock Ethics Institute, and Ravi Kumar Kopparapu, Earth and Environmental Systems Institute.

Even without actual contact, like us, other civilizations could be sending unpiloted probes to quietly peek at our civilization. These probes, like ours, would be small and might be hidden in a variety of places. In the asteroid belt they would probably go unnoticed, especially if these nonterrestrial objects are only 3 to 33 feet in size, weighing little more than a ton similar to our Voyager craft.

"Extraterrestrial artifacts may exist in the solar system without our knowledge simply because we have not yet searched sufficiently," said Haqq-Misra and Kopparapu. "Few if any of the attempts would be capable of detecting a 1 to 10 meter (3 to 33 foot) probe."

Haqq-Misra and Kopparapu use a probabilistic method to determine if we have looked closely enough anywhere in the solar system to definitively say there are no nonterrestrial objects here. The analysis is based on answering the question, how sure can we be that we should have already found any nonterrestrial objects lurking in the solar system.

They view the solar system as a fixed volume and figure out the percentages of that volume that would need to be thoroughly searched using a discovery capability small enough to detect these probes, assuming that the probes are not consciously camouflaged. The researchers note that most searches to date have not been fine enough to locate such small probes or to totally rule out anywhere.

After taking into account a variety of potential biases, such as "the universe is teeming with life" or "life is rare," the team developed an equation that can be applied to a portion of the volume of the solar system and determine whether sufficient searching has been done to ensure that we can say there are no nonterrestrial objects within that volume.

"The surface of the Earth is one of the few places in the solar system that has been almost completely examined at a spatial resolution of less than 3 feet," said Haqq-Misra and Kopparapu.

But even as humans have spread across the solid surfaces of the Earth, there are still caves, jungles and deserts as well as the ocean floor and subsurface areas that have not been explored. Even with this, the Earth does have a high confidence that no nonterrestrial artifacts exist.

The moon and Mars have been searched to a small extent. An ongoing mapping project, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, is looking at the moon at a resolution of about 20 inches, so we may eventually be able to determine if there are no nonterrestrial objects on the moon. The researchers caution that surface maps may not be sufficient to distinguish between a space probe and a rock.

The surface of Mars is still mostly unsurveyed and the researchers' confidence in the probability of no nonterrestrial artifacts is low. Similarly, locations like the Earth-moon Lagrange points, the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt might also shelter extra solar system probes, but the vast majority of the solar system's volume is uninvestigated.

"Searches to date of the solar system are sufficiently incomplete that we cannot rule out the possibility that nonterrestrial artifacts are present and may even be observing us," said Haqq-Misra and Kopparapu. They add that "the completeness of our search for nonterrestrial objects will inevitably increase as we continue to explore the moon, Mars and other nearby regions of space."

The infrared images of Mars at the top of the page show both reflected sunlight and heat radiation. Well, if a satellite search doesn't turn up a Sasquatch -- "twelve foot" tall or not -- that doesn't prove anything. It's only data: a search was done by satellites, nothing found. The conclusion that "there is no Bigfoot" is merely interpretation of that data. An assumption that none exists. It isn't proof it doesn't exist.

I recall seeing footage of some kind of giant snake (anacondas?) on some documentary af few years ago. They were filmed from the air, and these things were huge. There they were; on film, and even so, denial of exactly what they were, how big they "really" were, and so on, continued. Pretty amazing stuff, this footage, and yet it slowly sank from the cultural milieu. Now if you bring up "giant anaconda's" you're treated like a kook. (We also have film footage of Big Cats and there's still debate on that.)

So, if we spend the money on satellite searches for Bigfoot and other cryptids, and we do get images of these creatures then what?

Will further argument about their existence cease? Will all the thousands of witnesses be vindicated? Will the pathological skeptics and debunkers apologize to those they've insulted, and worse, once it's shown there "really is" a Bigfoot?

I'm not against any kind of satellite search for these creatures. I just don't care. For those that have seen them, they have the proof. For others, like myself who've never seen a cryptid, that's okay. I'm fine with it. I tend to think they exist, but if it's somehow proven they don't (and how can that ever be proven?) okay. And if it's proven they do, I'll have mixed emotions.

On the one hand, it'll be nice to know, and everyone can relax. But it will also lead to all kinds of issues about protection of the species and its environment. We'll also have questions and controversies surrounding the new question: "Okay, we know it exists, but just what exactly is it? Which leads to the possibility of killing one for study, something I am absolutely against.

I find it a little topsy turvy that an industrial strength skeptic like Radford would urge satellite searches for Bigfoot and other cryptids. On the one hand, he dismisses such "beliefs" with typical scofftoid aplomb. On the other, he considers using high technology to search for the things. What does he want to do with such knowledge if one of these cryptids is found? Would he be okay with further study, including expeditions to kill one?

I think those skeptics who dismiss the possible reality of Bigfoot and other creatures, yet suggest ways to look for the things (like the use of satellites and so on) need to take another step forward and tell us what they think they'll do with such knowledge, er, "proof" if one is ever found. It'd be interesting to know where they stand on such issues. Do they support a kill policy? Work towards protection of habitats? That's a good question for all concerened, skeptic or not.
