I finally have to give up on investigating UFO sightings. As I mentioned to a colleague, I have a great run looking into UFO sightings, met some wonderful people along the way and over the years I received thousands upon thousands of UFO sighting reports, most I would say were explainable, yet others were truly amazing and certainly remain unexplained.

There were just a few Ufologists that I would thank for their help over the years.

The media, who I would like to thank as well, gosh did they treat me with kindness and took an interest in what I had to say.

But anyway, I will leave the blogs up as an archive and will find a new hobby which doesn't involve sitting at a computer, I just cannot do anymore.

Over at his A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE blog, Kevin Randle provides us with an excellent post on one of the most intriguing, and controversial, cases within the realm of UFO research: the ultra-weird "Kelly-Hopkinsville" affair of 1955, in which a Kentucky, USA family was allegedly terrorized by alien entities from a UFO.

It might be reasonably argued that UFOs have no place at this particular blog. Maybe. But, the reason I mention the affair is because, on the specific matter of the event in question, a certain Major John E. Albert wrote the following, by way of an explanation:

"It is my opinion that the report Mrs. Lankford or her son, Elmer Sutton [name deleted but it is reasonable to assume it was Elmer Sutton], was caused by one of two reasons. Either they actually did see what they thought was a little man and at the time, there was a circus in the area and a monkey might have escaped, giving the appearance of a small man. Two, being emotionally upset, and discussing the article and showing pictures of this little monkey, that appeared like a man, their imaginations ran away with them and they really did believe what they saw, which they thought was a little man."

I am, of course, reminded here of the deep similarities between the major's explanation and those highly similar ones that have surfaced to try and explain away Britain's big-cats as circus escapees.

Similarly, when, in 1879, England's notorious Man-Monkey first manifested out of the dense trees surrounding Bridge 39 on the Shropshire Union Canal, rumours were rife that a gorilla was the cause of all the fuss - supposedly (but never, ever proved, of course) having escaped from a traveling menagerie.

I find it intriguing that when attempts are made to explain such curiosities as the big-cats, the Man-Monkey, and the Kelly-Hopkinsville creatures in wholly conventional terms and scenarios, one of the staple-ingredients that often surfaces is that of the circus-escapee.

And, given that the Man-Monkey saga began 132-years ago, the Kelly-Hopkinsville event took place 56-years ago, and the big-cats of Britain are still running around, it demonstrates that in terms of trying to expand their down-to-earth explanations across the decades, the skeptics have actually not get very far at all!

Next time you hear of a sighting of a weird beast, an out-of-place exotic animal, or something even stranger, keep a careful watch for commentary from the "experts" relative to that apparently-thriving and much-used old chestnut: the "zoo-escapee."

A Dallas truck driver moving along east bound I-635 toward Mesquite at 10:05 p.m. on November 18, 2010, watched a series of red and blue lights traveling in pairs and following the highway as they moved overhead, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

"They keep coming my way just following the interstate like a roadmap moving pretty dam quick," the witness stated. "These lights are hugging the freeway and all these other people on the road gotta be seeing this too. They kept coming and flew right over me. I looked up and out of my wind shield as they passed directly over me."

The lights flew in formation.

"But these lights are solid and not flashing and (are) red and blue - no green, red, and white. The blue lights are on my left and the red on my right. Traveling in what appears to be in pairs of blue and red like one unit with two lights each, three or four separate vehicles or aircraft, each pair was closer to each other than the space between each pair. All with perfect equal spacing among themselves."

The witness could see the lights, but could not make out the objects themselves - which were silent.

"There was a lot of city roadway lighting and I could not see any actual craft, just lights - red and blue solid - no flashing and fairly large like Volkswagen Beatle size. No helicopter rotor noise. No jet engine noise."

No video or images were included in the MUFON report, which was filed on November 19, 2010. Mesquite is a city in Dallas County, population 135,750.

40 miles southwest of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex lies Stephenville, TX. It was in this small ranching community that dozens of eyewitnesses spotted a UFO on the night of January 8, 2008. Witnesses described the object as flat and metallic with steady red lights and flashing white lights along its surface. Although officials from the Joint Reserve Base Naval Air Station in Fort Worth believe these percipients merely saw a commercial aircraft, local citizenry adamantly refute such an assertion. They claim the object moved far too fast, too quiet, and too low. One witness, Ricky Sorrells witnessed the object hovering approximately 300 feet off the ground over a field behind his home.

Given the proximity of the event and it's occurrence only one week ago, one might keep his/her eyes peeled for sightings over Oklahoma in the coming days.

Jerome Clark interviewed Betty Hill for the January 1978 edition of "UFO Report" [Page 40 ff.]

Mrs. Hill's responses to Mr. Clark took place almost seventeen years after her encounter (or alleged abduction) in 1961.

She was lucid and engaging, but at one point she related her ongoing rendezvous with UFOs at what she called her "landing area":

"On several occasions, while I was parked at my 'landing area,' UFO would hover over the roof of my car. It would be so close I could have thrown a rock up and hit the bottom of it."

"The 'new' UFOs aren't friendly as the 'old' ones were...now they sometimes shoot beams, and darts at cars in menacing fashion...

I was out there one night with a military officer and his wife. When he saw the UFO, he got out of the car and started walking toward it. Suddenly, a large swirling mass shot out from the object...it looked like a red ball rolling over and over and heading directly toward him.

I jumped out and tried to film this with my movie camera. But then - I know this sounds incredible - a green light hit my camera and burned out the switch and the circuitry so that my camera wouldn't work. When the officer saw this red ball coming at him, he turned and ran back to the car. The red ball stopped, rolled back to the craft, and disappeared." [Page 43]

Clark doesn't pursue this intriguing story, but goes on with this:

"Have you had any contact with UFO beings since your abduction?"

Mrs. Hill says, "No, not even a fleeting glimpse of the aliens...."

Clark, as usual, misses the import of the exchange.

Skeptic Robert Sheaffer wrote a letter to the magazine which appeared in the May 1978 issue.

He felt offended by Mr. Clark noting his (Sheaffer's) analysis of the Hill story, citing time discrepancies, Clark not acknowledging that Mrs. Hill didn't get back to Mr. Sheaffer with explanations or correctives.

Neither Clark or Sheaffer noticed -- or they ignored - Mrs. Hill's bizarre account(s) of UFOs at her "landing area,"

This has always been the problem with "ufologists" - they ignore the trees for the forest, as it were.

Mr. Clark's interview was centered, pretty much, on Mrs. Hill's reaction to the 1975 NBC movie "The UFO Incident" with James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons.

I liked Mrs. Hill, and I don't think she consciously hoaxed her "abduction."

She, like Socorro's Lonnie Zamora, was a plain, normal person. Was is the operative word here.

It seems that the account she gave Mr. Clark, which he errantly ignored, indicated Mrs. Hill's mental state had become infused with imaginings of a bizarre, and totally UFO-related kind.

But there is the possibility that what Mrs. Hill reported was what she actually experienced: the original abduction and the episode at her "landing area."

However, one has to lean toward a mental malfunction, primarily because no one else (outside Barney Hill) witnessed the 1961 abduction and the military man in the "landing area" incident never came forward. Mrs. Hill never provided, as far as I know, his name so that he could verify what she said happened to him.

Also, in the Clark interview, Mrs. Hill said she empathized with Parker and Hickson of the Pascagoula abduction, knowing things that confirmed, for her, the reality of that event.

She wouldn't disclose what those confirmatory things were, and Mr. Clark didn't press the issue or follow up.

Mrs. Hills antedated interest in science fiction items, and her exploitation by ufologists after her 1961 story was made public increased her mania.

The evidence for mania is palpable. The evidence for an extraterrestrial abduction and that later UFO encounter at her 'landing area" is nil.

Can we dismiss the Hill abduction story? Yes, but with a caveat: things, as she supposedly experienced them, are not outside the realm of possibility.

As Arthur C. Clarke wrote in his book, "Profiles of the Future", "When a scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."

Film-maker Paul Kimball keeps resurrecting old UFO sightings and events as if they prove something meaningful about the phenomenon.

He's currently working up a Seven Wonders of the UFO World list, and has started with the Rendlesham event of 1980.

Mr. Kimball is a moderately intelligent guy. Why he keeps dredging up old UFO stories baffles us.

What's his point? That these sightings/events are convincing evidence for a UFO reality?

UFOs exist, that's a given, but the sightings that Mr. Kimball touts - and keeps touting - didn't determine what UFOs were when they happened and they still haven't provided any obvious clue(s) to the essence of the UFO mystery.

Beating the UFO dead horses isn't counter-productive, it's just plain stupid.

The old UFO cases have been mined by ufologists to the point of total evisceration, and nothing has been derived from the ham-handed scrutiny.

Kimball certainly knows this, or should.

But what else does he or any ufologist have to do? New sightings are without the drama or details that constructed previous flying saucer activity.

Even the recent Stephenville, Texas affair is without flamboyant detail or anecdote.

Retackling old UFO, weathered UFO events is a futile endeavor.

Mr. Kimball, and other ufologists, would do well to pursue UFOs with 2008 methodologies and ideas.

Reworking old UFO accounts is mere UFO quackery, a pretense that one is actively engaged in the pursuit of truth about the UFO enigma.

Mr. Kimball must have better ideas up his sleeve. He's not a UFO quidnunc, or says he isn't.

But he and his coterie keep harking back to the past, and like Marcel Proust, locked into remembrances that will avail them, or anyone else, of nothing.

AN EXTRAORDINARY ACCOUNT:

The source of this report, who I shall refer to as ML, told me an extraordinary story about how one morning, around 6.30 am, he and his wife were returning home after babysitting at their daughter's house when they saw a huge object hovering over a field, to the right of the road that they were driving on. At the time of the sighting, it was a bright dawn with a clear, blue sky. ML had spotted the object first through the trees and, whilst trying to keep it in sight, nearly drove into the ditch on the left-hand side of the road. His wife exclaimed to him to be careful, wondering why he was driving in such an erratic manner. He stopped the van and told his wife to look out through his window. He asked, "What do you see?" She said, "What is it?!" He asked, "What does it look like?" She said, "It's a spaceship!"

ML informed me that the object was, in his estimation, many hundreds of feet in length, with pastel lights all around it that appeared to pulsate softly. ML further described it as "cloud-like", saying that the colours around the object were like "moving clouds". It is possible the object was surrounded by a cloudy mist, perhaps a camouflage, or its colour was a cloudy grey.

The couple observed the object for a short while, which ML estimated to be a few minutes. He had gotten out of the van and climbed up on the bonnet (hood) to get a better look. I asked ML to sketch the object. He was able to do this in a matter of a minute or so. I took him outside to look at the sky and asked him to give me an approximation of the angle subtended by the object. That is, it's length as it appeared to the naked eye. The figure below is the first sketch made by ML. It shows a classic "flying saucer" shape.

When ML told me where he had stopped the van, I realized that they had been very close to a sensitive Ministry of Defence (MOD) property! The couple were just past Church Lane, located on Burghfield Road, as it approached the M4 motorway, near the city of Reading. The massive object was hovering over a field adjacent to AWE-the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston. (The facility was previously known as AWRE, the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment.)

The website for AWE states, "AWE plays a crucial role in the defence of the United Kingdom, by providing and maintaining the warheads for the country's nuclear deterrent. We are a centre of scientific and technological excellence, with some of the most advanced research, design and production facilities in the world."

So ML and his wife had spotted what they called a "spaceship" next door to the Atomic Weapons Establishment. Suddenly, from a hovering position, the UFO started to move directly over the MOD site, then rapidly towards the M4 motorway. At that point, it was out of sight.

ML is convinced that there must have been many other witnesses because of the sheer size of the Unidentified Flying Object and its proximity to AWE. He is certain that the object must have been captured on the innumerable security cameras surrounding the site. He is also certain that the object must have been sighted by drivers on the M4 motorway and possibly even picked up by the cameras that monitor traffic on that busy link between South Wales and London.

It was later established that the sighting had taken place on the 11th of September 2004. Whilst ML appreciates that this case is not "news" after so many years, he would like some kind of official confirmation of his sighting. He feels that the UFO must have been tracked on radar, been seen by satellite, and visually observed by many other people.

His wife is equally mystified by the appearance of this object. Her first reaction was that it was a 'spaceship' and she has not changed her opinion since. What was it doing hovering over a highly sensitive MOD site? Did the armed guards at AWE spot it? Where did it come from? Where did it go? These are questions we have no answers to at the moment.

Rob Hartland got a new hobby photographing UFOs over the hill from his home in Darlington, Australia. He claims to have 100's of pictures of UFO.

Rob bought a 20 megapixel Sony Cyber Shot DSC-RX100 camera with a CMOS censor and spent a lot of time getting used to it.In December 2012 after taking some photographs of some clouds he downloaded his pictures to his computer and noticed a few of the images had some objects in them that appeared to be some type of crafts or UFOs.

Rob started setting his camera to continuous shooting mode taking 30 pictures at a time. After taking 200 or so pictures Rob was getting UFOs in at least 2% of them on a bad day. Some days he would get UFOs in 20% of them. Even on a bad day getting 6 pictures with a UFO in them is outstanding in my book, getting 40 on a good day is just unbelievable.
