Destination Innovation is a new series that explores the research, science and other projects underway at NASA's Ames Research Center. Episode 1 focuses on the KEPLER MISSION, a space telescope that is revolutionizing our knowledge of planets outside our solar system and now providing SETI signal candidate targets for the Greenbank Radio Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia.

Congressional funding for Kepler - which has identified 1,235 candidate alien planets to date and recently discovered the first exoplanet with two suns in its sky - is due to run out in November 2012, but an extension may be approved is the new mission proposal is approved. The NASA Kepler team will know by next spring whether it's approved, notes "THE DAILY GALAXY".

Meanwhile, the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia has detected a radio signal while scanning the exoplanetary candidate KOI 817 discovered by the Kepler mission. This is the kind of signal SETI scientists would expect to find if an alien civilization is transmitting.

"These signals look similar to what we think might be produced from an extraterrestrial technology. They are narrow in frequency, much narrower than would be produced by any known astrophysical phenomena, and they drift in frequency with time, as we would expect because of the Doppler effect imposed by the relative motion of the transmitter and the receiving radio telescope," according to the UC Berkeley SETI team now researching the unusual radio signal from KOI 817.

Currently, no unambiguous alien "HELLO THERE!" has been detected.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the crash of a 737 in Pakistan last Friday may have been caused by a UFO sighting by the pilot minutes before the accident.In the Russian news report below, rumors that air traffic controllers received a report from the pilot of the Bhoja Air Boeing 737 minutes before the crash on approach to the Islamabad airport included an account of being buzzed by a triangular-shaped unidentified flying object.Pakistani officials have initially blamed the crash on a combination of extremely bad weather, pilot error and aging equipment. Eyewitnesses have stated that the jet was already consumed by fire as it approached the airport and was too low and traveling too fast.Whether or not a UFO actually interfered with the flight or not is pure speculation at this point. It is whether the pilot believed an unidentified aircraft was interfering with the flight which is important, because of the resulting distraction and confusion.Here is how Russian TV is reporting the incident. UFO SIGHTING IN WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA ON AUGUST 7TH 2013 - LARGE BRIGHT LIGHT WITH THREE SMALLER BRIGHTER LIGHTS APPEARING TO DROP FROM BOTTOM OF OBJECT

I was driving east from Longwood Fl. to Winter Springs Fl. when I spotted a bright glowing light, what struck me as odd were the three smaller bright lights that seemed to appear beneath the object, no movement to them just sitting in a row directly beneath the larger glowing object. I knew that it was not a star it was just too big. When I pulled over to take photos with my IPhone I noticed the three lights disappearing in what seemed to be a fog or clou, however there were no clouds in the sky. The larger bright glowing object was still there. Also there was a wavey vapor trail that was below the object but not close to the object, however you could tell that the contrail was from the object. It looked like it has coming from the ground up. This sighting went on for 10 minutes and I still took photos from my phone at my home. It then faded out and it was gone. What was left seemed to be a very bright whispy cloud almost like the moon was behind giving off a bright look to it.

Another month and another UFO to complete!Judy chose #7 this month.Uh oh. Again.All that shuffling earlier in the year when putting the whole top together was chosen before I had the blocks made has finally come full circle...I get to shuffle one last time to put the whole top together!First I have to trim down the applique squares, but that shouldn't be too much trouble (she says while wondering if she'll live to regret that statement). And I have the air conditioner running, so the iron shouldn't be too much trouble.My mom is on her way to spend the day quilting (what else should you do when you're unemployed?), so if I have trouble, I'll have her expertise right there!I'm excited to get this top together, even if I have absolutely no clue where it will end up. It will mark another UFO completely done! (Well, the top...)And since we're talking about UFOs, I mentioned that while on vacation I worked on the Whig Rose appliques from months ago that are the UFO I didn't finish. I had lots of quiet time with the hubby out fishing and it was just too hot for turning on the iron, so here's my progress:The bottom two were done before I left. The top right still needs little yellow centers, but since I wasn't using my iron (remember my circle tutorial?), those still need to be prepped and sewn down. So instead I layed out the fourth block. I'm feeling pretty good about these, but I know I still have the triangle pieces to go too, even if they are easier.And while we're talking about applique, I suppose I could update you on the cows. I started off with a bang, then slacked off, though they're coming along.Not quite half done and then come the pinwheels. I thought about working on those today, but we'll see how the quilt top construction goes...Hopefully we get lots of quilting done today, but sometimes we end up out shopping and eating instead... UFO sighting Hurley, Wisconsin

The UFO in this SIGHTING appears to be disc in shape but it is really hard to tell what its true shape is due to the darkness. The rotating lights certainly does give you the idea that it is round, although after putting a screen capture of the video under many different filters I really can't get any good definition of its shape.

This is a rather short video, it is just under 1 minute long but the UFO SIGHTING is repeated while zoomed in on the rotating lights. The original footage is probably just under 30 seconds which usually puts up a red flag on the UFO video being a fake. I am not sure that this one is a fake though; if you listen to the guy in the background continuously say that the lights that you are seeing are the result of an afterburner from a jet. I don't think this is the case, if it were an after burner these lights would being streaking across the sky at very high rate of speed. The UFO in this video seems to be hovering according to the buildings below it. A jet with the afterburner going would also make a tremendous amount of noise. The UFO in this video is not that far away, if this was a result of an afterburner you would hear the noise without a doubt. Below is a photo of a jet with the afterburners engaged and you can see how someone could confuse this for a UFO with lights, but as I mentioned these lights in the video are not moving across the sky at a high rate of speed and there is no noise. So I would definitely say that this is not the result of an afterburner on a jet.

My friend and I saw a silver-white point of light as we arrived at the front of my building on a sunny and windy Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, California. After realizing it wasn't floating off, I ran and got my Canon FS300, and propped myself against the fence the best that I could to hold the camera steady. I was fairly convinced it was some type of hot air couldn't see the viewfinder very Getting a bit far sighted so all I saw was a bright dot on the screen while I was filming. And I knew it wasn't moving, but hovering. Still convinced it was maybe a passenger balloon, I made the comment about balloons a woman I saw in a UFO documentary closer inspection with different versions, this is definitely not a balloon, hot-air, mylar, Goodyear Blimp (wink), or otherwise. I feel bad for making fun of that lady. Please be polite.

In the search for extraterrestrial life, water is highly regarded as a key ingredient for life to arise. Its polar structure allows it to form "hydrogen bonds," which are crucial for the formation of large organic carbon structures like DNA. Water is so important that scientists are constantly looking for planets in the "habitable zone" around their stars, a land flowing with milk and honey-er, I mean, liquid water. A habitable zone is determined by the properties of the star-with very bright, hot stars, it would be further out; and with dim, cool stars, liquid water could exist much closer in.

However, liquid water can exist in some out-of-the-way places. Several of Jupiter's moons experience such strong gravitational interactions with Jupiter and each other that they are heated up by tidal flexing, making them warm enough to sustain water in its liquid form, despite being five times further away from Sun than the Earth is!

One strong candidate for a watery moon is Europa. It has a frozen ice outer shell, and it's speculated that underneath might be that liquid gold - water. Scientists are still unsure just how much internal heating Europa receives, so it's still not fully known how thick the ice is. Tidal flexing keeps it dynamic and changing, and scientists have observed that the surface is lined with cracks, possibly formed from the ice chaotically pulling apart and smushing back together like giant icebergs in a mosh-pit. This is some of the evidence suggesting there might be a liquid Europan ocean underneath its icy crust.

We know that disequilibrium and dynamic change are characteristic of global cycles, which could potentially sustain an interacting biosphere. Planets and moons with lots going on are instinctively considered more "alive" than those that are unchanging rocks. So with the active energy source supplied by tidal forcing, and the possibility of a watery abundance, can we expect to find mermaids swimming beneath Europa's ice shell?

Once again, one has to think outside of the box when considering possibilities for Europan life. What might be lethal to some forms of life on Earth might be vital to something that might live on Europa. For example, Jupiter has a strong magnetosphere, which blasts harsh radiation towards its moons. Humans would never be able to survive there. But perhaps some forms of life could have adapted this radiation to their advantage. It's speculated that the radiation splits the water molecules on Europa's surface, allowing the hydrogen to float off into space, and the oxygen to sink into the ocean, mixing down to feed underwater life protected from the external radiation.

Life continues to surprise us, even on Earth. Scientists have discovered an abundance of organisms living at the bottom of our oceans near boiling hot hydrothermal vents, and it is possible that the internal tectonics on Europa cause hydrothermal vents to exist there, too. Maybe we can find analogous life thriving there as well.

But, maybe not. Our definition of life is really quite nebulous, and we only have one example of a planet to base it off of. Perhaps alien life will be so strange that we don't recognize it, or perhaps it is simply not there. But we'll never know if we don't look.

The next mission to Europa is called JUICE: JUpiter ICy moon Explorer. It's run by the European Space Agency, and is scheduled to conduct flybys of Europa in 2030. Some groups have also pushed to send a lander to sample surface geology and perhaps melt down through the ice to explore the ocean beneath, but nothing concrete is planned yet.

Though all we can do for the moment is speculate about what might exist there, if life can thrive inside a planet, then we have many more options of where to look. Europa is definitely expanding our ideas of where a habitable zone can exist.
